Really good first episode, didnt feel like a letdown. Then again I avoid everything about it other than what day it's going to be shown on, I prefer to have it all revealed as I watch. I recognised Ed Sheeran but it didn't bother me. No more jarring than many of the other big name actors who have appeared in it or indeed, big name musicians. Did people get so het up the last time there was a cameo? Maybe they did and I just missed it :p

No because people only get worked up when it's someone they recognize it seems. Many other big names have been in the show but now it's suddenly a crime.

Going to throw out some predictions for this season:

Arya will die during the siege of King's Landing. Before she gets killed, she'll get her revenge on Cersei. She might spare Jamie.

The Hound will turn out to be the Lord of Light's champion.

Jon Snow won't be King in the North by the end of the season. Sansa will become Queen. She'll leave for The Vale with everyone who isn't able to fight. Jon will be given the title of Commander, tasked with defending The Wall. He will fully expect to die there.

The rest of Westeros will continue to ignore the WW threat. The armies of The North will be crushed. The Wall will fall. As news of this event spreads, the remaining Lannister forces will surrender and rally under Daenerys' banner to fight against the army of winter.

For a bonus point: Undead Gregor will kill a dragon.

It's a crime when the person is so recognisable that it pulls you out of the show. I don't know what Joe Bloggs from Coldplay or Sigur Ros look like, therefore it didn't detract from the show. But like it or not, I know exactly what Ed Sheeran looks like and it was jarring and I spent the 5mins of that scene thinking "wtf is Ed Sheeran doing in this" rather than thinking what the director/writer/script actually wanted me to think about at that moment in the story (e.g. who are these guys, are they going to harm Arya, is she going to harm then, what do they mean for her story? etc). Compare it to Daniel Craig and Simon Peggs being in Star Wars. That was cleverly done so as not to detract from the film. No-one knew it was them.

It was a stupid decision seemingly made to appease Maisie Williams. We all know doing things to appeal to star talent hardly ever ends well.. I bet there was a huge ruckus behind the scenes regarding this.

Yeah the scene seemed a little off for me, Ed came across quite awkward in it as well sitting smiling into nothingness, I was probably just more focused on him during that scene due to recognising him though.

I've no issue with the whole Ed thing but the thing that bothered me was the recap. One of the first things they show is Ayra slitting Frey's throat. Then the next scene is "Frey" with his people about him, etc. It would've been far more effective if they hadn't done the Frey's death recap. That way you might have temporarily forgotten he was dead (as I did until the recap reminded me) and it would've been far more impactful. Hell, put the throat slashing as an in-scene recap afterwards, if needed. It was a poor editing choice that diminished a moment of sweet vengeance, IMO. It's akin to showing a note on Frey's table at the Red Wedding saying "To Do list for wedding: Kill all the Starks!"

What recap? I don't recall seeing any recap (watched a recording of the 02:00 showing, perhaps it wasn't there).

It was a separate thing that you could choose to watch, I also didn't watch it, I assume most didn't, and I also forgot she slit his throat.

Some damn good speculation there my friend!

I can't begin to imagine whats going to happen with Arya... Even for THIS show, her arc is mental.

Agree with you on the hound. But where does that leave Beric? Is his job just to help guide him there?

Again, I think you're right about Jon and Sansa's arc. I think there's a good chance Sansa won't live through all this. Jon too actually. I Foresee an " I've lived two full lives already" type monologue.

The Lannisters seem to have that redemptive quality that will undoubtedly see them through to the end. Though Cersei will perish at the hands of Jamie in a juxtaposed parallel to how he killed Aerys, I've no doubt. Tyrion will outlast them all and rally what remains of the Lannister forces to go North.

I've no doubt the wall will fall this season whilst conflict still rages elsewhere, I just can't quite place bets on where everyone's going to be when it does....

Do Americans know who he is though?
To be fair to the producers I'd imagine they're aware of him but didn't realise he's sort-of our crap cousin to Justin Beiber. Eg. in the press too much and literally everyone with eyes will recognise him.

I had no idea when watching, but then I'm the type of person who listening to music and isn't all that bothered who it is, so long as I like it. With Ed Sheeran I couldn't care less on both counts.

The kid from This is England was more familiar (Thomas Turgoose) but I did need to look him up first.

I had no idea who Ed Sheeran is so I was unbothered. Nice to see a different song in the show! Corking first episode, GoT's season openers have tended to be pretty weak so this was welcome.

Nope they've changed to only showing when it's needed these days instead of putting boobs in for the sake of it. Next ones will no doubt be Missandei's.

A number of the major actresses won't do it anymore unless they think it's story necessary.

I didn't see a recap either. If it was optional, send of to be upset that watching the recap recapped things...?

I only watched him die a few days ago though, I was initially wondering if it was done word flash back or a Bran vision.

I thought the brunette beer wench was Arya though? Looked like the face she used to kill him?
