Summer Transfer Window 2017/18 - Rumours & Signings

VvD on strike and now Keita's just ended a Leipzig training session by putting in a horror challenge and injuring a teammate. The lengths people go to, to join Liverpool.

Would you want a player like that? VvD just seems like a complete mercenary. He's only been there two seasons and he's supposed to be their captain. Wouldn't you be worried he'd then pull the same thing out in a couple of seasons to get a move to a bigger club?

And a player who would intentionally injure a teammate, wtf...

Oh come on Shami. We all turn a blind eye when a player is pushing to join our own club. The VvD situation is no different than a 100 other transfers and I was being a bit mischievous with what I said re Keita. Supposedly one of his teammates took him out and he retaliated - I suspect it had nothing to do with a move to Liverpool.

It would be cheaper in the long run for Liverpool to just buy Southampton. In fact I do wonder why some of the big boys haven't done it? Kind of like Red Bull in F1. Use the smaller club to get young players game time then upgrade them when they make the cut.

I've joked about it before but as Shami says, it's not possible to own two sides that compete in the same competition. You only have to look at the two Red Bull clubs - in order for them to both be able to compete in the CL Salzburg had to do some major restructuring and iinm (I haven't followed it closely) they're now not owned by RB but they're just sponsoring them.

The inflated prices for average players is a knock on affect of the prices City are paying and PSG are willing to pay.

This is what is making £25 million players now worth 50 million.

Nothing surprising but article.

Plenty of clubs can still get their transfer business done without spending insane amounts of money. Look at what Bayern, RM and Barca do every year. You very rarely see them paying a ridiculous amount for an average player. Quite the opposite usually. RM like to spend £20-30m on random players sometimes but they are usually players with promise who might not work out but thats not exactly crazy money.

I disagree that it's to do with City and PSG. It's because of the increased TV deal and the huge difference between the money flowing into the EPL and other leagues. Now we're at the point where the clubs fighting against relegation are richer than some of the big teams in other leagues.

I know what you're saying...and 10 years ago, I would have agreed. But I've waited too long now to win a title. Right now, I would take anyone, even if just for 1 season, if it meant winning the league.

Are we talking about the same Real that blew £60m(?) on James and just signed a 16 year old for close to £40m? And didn't Barca pay up to £50m(?) on Andre Gomes?

Tbf, as a general rule yes, those clubs don't get bent over quite like a PL side would but there's reasons why. Inflated fees aren't just because of how much money the buying club has - how rich the selling club are too is just as important. As Frank will testify, sides would rather buy from within their own league to minimise the risk of that player settling or adapting which causes a bigger problem to PL sides than it does Real/Barca/Bayern. The TV money here means that no PL side is forced to sell their players any more. Real/Bayern/Barca can go pick off the best players from their leagues with relative ease because most other sides don't have £100m of TV money propping them up and have to be realistic about selling players. It's also far easier for Spanish sides to pick up players straight from South America, where there isn't as much money, than it is a PL side.

One thing to add to Baz's comment - I may have missed it but I don't think so - is that there is a lot less competition in Germany and La Liga and that works for Bayern and to an extent Real and Barca also (Atleti are less of an issue due to the finance of their new stadium as well as the transfer ban this summer and the former may affect them for a few years to come).

If a player wants to go to Germany (after all we are talking about decent prospects or already "made" players here) there are two - perhaps 3 with the Red Bull team making waves now too, spain there are two or three but in the EPL there are arguably 5 or 6. and surely that magnifies any possible purchase either within the EPL or coming from aborad also

For the competition its great - but it does work against majority of the clubs in the EPL for any player you care to mention, as several clubs are usually competing for the same person and prices will sky rocket naturally - with wages and transfer fees.

edit - it was amusing though that RM settled on selling Morata to chelsea for a fee that Utd had offered a month before (if reports are true) which got rejected out of hand at the time.

Indeed and look at the lengths some go to leave, biting and spitting their way out. These new recruits sound like they have attitude to fit right in :D

well said

Hernandez to WHU is the deal of the transfer window imo

Great coup for them and 16mill is a snip even if he had one year left

Excited to see what WHU can do this year with the other signings they have made also

This story about Real Madrid agreeing a 160m deal for Mbappe. If thats true, then I'm finally ashamed to be a football fan. Prices, especially this summer, have been ridiculous. Sickening at times when you consider all those millions going on a footballer. (When you consider the other professions in life that are far more important or other things that need those sorts of amounts of money)... but I've made comments and then bared with it.

But 160m, is a disgusting amount of money for 1 man (and at 18, barely even a man) , especially one who is just a footballer (and not even a legendary footballer, but an 18 year old with 1 decent season under his belt).

160m.

The mind boggles and when really thinks on it, cringes.

Is this Lemar really any good and a player Arsenal need? Seems like it might happen according to today's media articles.

---

Next season is going to be super competitive.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Man U, Man C, Chelsea all capable of winning the league.

Then you've got Everton investing heavily and West Ham doing some rebuilding.

FIFA are going to have to give England 5 champions league spots soon.
