I don't think they've ended the legal fight, I just think there is absolutely no more legal fight left.
They have fought in every court in the land, and then went to Europe, and lost everywhere.

Sounds like they've accepted there's no fight left based on the latest scans and the US doctor saying it was too late.

If the parents get on board with the withdrawal of care then that should placate the loonies.

Yup, well acceptance is one of the stages of grief, I hope they can eventually find solace.
I'd be amazed if both don't end up or started out with mental health issues as a result of this.
Their battle has been far from normal behaviour.

Things like this give me that rare sick feeling in my stomach, because as a parent we all think of ourselves with our own kids in these situations. Hard to really know how anyone would feel in their situation, really sad all around.

Charles parents did everything they could. Charlie can be proud of them and they can be proud of themselves.

Charlie can't be proud, he's at best an organ storage facility, at worst just a temporarily not-necrotising host body for a very weakly developed mind held together purely by a tube in his mouth.

Perhaps if they'd caught it early, this wouldn't be so unfortunate.

I think that is a bit of a stretch personally. At least they saw sense in the end though, I wasn't expecting it.

Well the new 'gloomier' results were only wheeled out in court the other day, the question will now become what might have been had the hospital allowed treatment right away rather than fighting the parents for months while he deteriorated.

The treatment would have been purely experimental and results will never be known for Charlie. He was on a ventilator and extensively damaged at the point GOSH sought the court review so best case scenario was bleak, hence GOSH acting. I'm sure the family will sue GOSH along those line but they won't get anywhere.

From GOSH's statement:

When the hospital was informed that the Professor had new laboratory findings causing him to believe NBT would be more beneficial to Charlie than he had previously opined, GOSH’s hope for Charlie and his parents was that that optimism would be confirmed. It was, therefore, with increasing surprise and disappointment that the hospital listened to the Professor’s fresh evidence to the Court. On 13 July he stated that not only had he not visited the hospital to examine Charlie but in addition, he had not read Charlie’s contemporaneous medical records or viewed Charlie’s brain imaging or read all of the second opinions about Charlie’s condition (obtained from experts all of whom had taken the opportunity to examine him and consider his records) or even read the Judge’s decision made on 11 April. Further, GOSH was concerned to hear the Professor state, for the first time, whilst in the witness box, that he retains a financial interest in some of the NBT compounds he proposed prescribing for Charlie. Devastatingly, the information obtained since 13 July gives no cause for optimism. Rather, it confirms that whilst NBT may well assist others in the future, it cannot and could not have assisted Charlie.

There was never any chance that the treatment would work. The parents were given false hope by shysters.
