Sale of petrol and diesel cars to be banned by 2040

23 years ago, there were 10 million internet users worldwide. Now there are 3.2 billion.

Technology moves at a fast pace.

I wonder what they'll do about classic cars though.

Well, the vast majority of classics are petrol powered. In fact, I can't think of a single car that is regarded as a classic being diesel powered. So, I guess petrol will still be sold for the foreseeable future but just won't be as widely available as it is now.

Government announces forward thinking plan.

People complain the country isnt forward thinking enough.

:p

Hardly forward thinking is it? Let's ban diesel and petrol cars. It's a soundbite and sheep mentality.

Release the details of how we are going to accomplish this, especially with the negativity around nuclear power.

Are vans/ coaches/ buses included/ construction vehicles included?

If we had spent the billions spent on HS2 on this we would be ahead of the curve.

They're banning both petrol and diesel, aren't they?

The future here we come! Yay! :D

As previous posters; I don't get the furore. There is an entire generation gap of time to adopt a new breed of vehicle engine. What exactly is the problem?

Did you? its the same title more or less minus the word vehicle

They're looking at banning new car sales. Which is in line with the EU, as well as some of the manufacturers. 2040 is 23 years away. That's plenty of time for the manufacturers to get their act together. In fact seeing the way the wind is blowing I'd hope that petrol and diesel is the minority product in 10 years.

Only exception: what happens to high end cars like Aston Martin? Is there a place for them in the world after 2040?

Yes, it should be pointed out that this is NEW cars with those engines banned from 2040, not existing....and it's 23 years away. I'll be nearly 60 then!

The only issue I can see at the moment is infrastructure.

How are people with no driveways, who park cars on the street for instance supposed to charge their cars? Are we going to have wires going from houses, over pavements and in to cars?

Hardly call 4% of new car sales rare. Its extremely rare to go to the supermarket and not see a couple plugged in. There's a lot of infastructure out there and it's growing fast.
Its a lame target but what do you expect from this government. Set a deadline that is pretty meaningless as without it you would be hard pressed to buy a new ice by then anyway.
