I'd been waiting for Vega hoping that it would provide a slightly cheaper solution than a 1080Ti but it's looking like that's not going to happen now if the revealed performance is to believed. Cost or performance for that matter.

However, the more I've looked into it the less and less likely it appears that there's anything out there at the moment, or imminently in Vega's case, that's going to provide rock solid 60Hz @ 4K.

Am I wrong? Or should I just wait for Volta?

I'm not in a mad rush in any case as it seems my Nitro+ 480 will provide a decent 1080P experience for the foreseeable future.

Guess I was hoping we'd reached a decent 4K gaming period but I don't think we're quite there yet.

I was playing for 18 months on a 980ti at 4k 60hz. Most games would be fine with high settings. On demanding titles you'd have to play a little with shadows on medium etc to get it. I've recently got a 1080ti though, and while it means there's less playing with settings to get 4k@60, I can't say I've actually noticed any visible difference that's improved my gaming experience. Personally, if I was struggling to justify a 1080ti, I'd get a second hand 980ti for less than £300.

I started gaming at 4K on a GTX 780 Ti. That was March 2014.

Well my 480 can manage older titles with 40-50fps but I was referring to modern titles with a stable 60fps, and all the bells and whistles turned on.

Looking at reviews something like Ghost Recon Wildlands dips to the 40's even with a 1080Ti.

but I was referring to modern titles with a stable 60fps, and all the bells and whistles turned on.

Indeed, but do you need all the bells and whistles turned on? For instance, a high DPI screen means less need for AA. And with GSync and Freesync you no longer need a stable 60 fps.

I'd say no it's not remotely realistic. Ghost wild lands being a good example of where it doesn't get close.

Yes you can reduce settings but you don't need a 1080ti to reduce settings, that can be done in any card;)

GSync and Freesync don't apply as I game on my 58" TV. Hence the need for a steady 60Hz.

You're right, I could always tone things down but that's not why you buy an expensive GPU.

A 1080Ti can get pretty close so I'm hoping Volta ups the game.

I think next gen will be the true 4K card. Yes the 1080Ti can do it "most of the time". But next gen the 2080Ti or whatever, should be able to reach 60 in >95% of games. Even more if you put the settings on HIGH rather than ULTRA. And from watching several videos on the subject. It's really what we should be doing. Ultra offers next to no noticeable visual improvements in most games and massively hurts FPS. HIGH is where it's at.

1080 ti works great for me at 60hz there is maybe one or two games I have to adjust a setting down from max.
If you arnt willing to do that then 4k isnt for you just now, stick to yer 1080p console rez for now :-)

See that's the thing. My PS4 Pro manages with its bastardised 480 and tiled rendering, that's why I was surprised that we're still not quite there yet with single PC cards.

If I'm going to spend over £600 on a GPU I don't want to have to turn anything down to get a smooth 60fps. :(

I still remember getting a 9700Pro years ago and finally being able to max everything out. Showing my age I guess!

Whatever it is I know it's not native 4K but it still looks pretty damned good.

It does indeed look like I'm going to have to wait until at least March before upgrading then.

I'll just have to put off playing Witcher 3 a little longer. :)

As other have said some high or ultra settings are totally pointless resulting in huge overheads for barely visible gain. On BF1 one such feature is post processing which takes about 30% of your performance, other smaller but not insignificant gains can be had by reducing thing like AA. As a rule "Ultra" in modern titles has tendency to be a power hungry overkill, some of this does depend on your display, how close you are to it and the genre of game but at 1080Ti level you should be able to play most games at 4K 60Hz with stunning visuals, whether that remains true for future titles is less certain.
