James Bond Returns... November 2019

I don't hold out much hope for this. I like Daniel Craig but haven't really liked any of the Bond movies since Goldeneye.

I think Bond is very difficult to do in the modern era. Either ends up too campy or turns into Jason Bourne. I don't have much time for the post-Fleming novels either. A lot of what made Bond successful at the time (post war / cold war intrigue, international travel, depicitions of sex and violence etc.) have all become totally mainstream.

I'm sure this will be another comfortable franchise movie and will rake in plenty more cash. Unfortunately, I think the best of Bond is all in the past. I can only see another great Bond movie coming if it's made as a period piece - a bit like Guy Ritchie's Man from UNCLE movie which I thought was pretty good in a campy sort of way.

It seems that, after each new 90's+ "Bond" the first film is great and then each film after gets worse very quickly!

Brosnan - GoldenEye was epic, all the rest were garbage.
Craig - Casino Royale was epic, all the rest were garbage.

For me Moore peaked at Moonraker and Connery peaked at Thunderball, all the rest after those films were poor.

Geezer hit the nail on the head - a bond film without the cold war element is just another action film that feels strangly awkward.
Like a Bourne film but not as good.
GoldenEye was the pinnacle - had it all and did it well. Also like the two Timothy Dalton movies too but Daniel Craig.. not so much. Clearly just doing it for the £

I'm praying that Nolan never touches the series. Don't get me wrong, I love Nolan and I like Bond, but that darker reimagining has been done already with these Raimi flicks and I just don't think it works.

Generally, I don't think Bond holds that same place within the genre as it used to. Other films since the go to classics have just done the whole thing better.

Plus, Nolan's best work is his own. Don't get me wrong, I like the Batman trilogy, but every time one was released it felt like we where being deprived something infinitely more imaginative.

The scene in Dr No where Connery sits in wait of his assassin Dent, cooly playing solitaire with a pack of cards is one of my favourite in cinema."That's a Smith and Wesson and you've had your six.." amazing...
That was apparrently a BIG, unpopular mistake and the last time screen Bond ever killed in cold blood, until Brosnan made Dr Kaufmann shoot himself with his own gun. Audiences supposedly hated Bond doing that... which is odd, because book Bond was a very nasty, cold-blooded little *** in future I won't attempt to hide swearwords like this ***. It's what I liked best about Tiomothy Dalton's version - The script was naff and suffering from having to measure up to Connery and Moore, but the actor's portrayal was bang on. Brosnan had a moment or two, while Craig does it nicely... but Dalton still is more book Bond than any of the others, I'd say.

Probably went against expectation for mainstream cinema at the time as Bond was more of an antihero. As you say, the literary Bond is not a particularly likeable character. He's a very cynical and selfish individual, a bit like Fleming.

I agree about Timothy Dalton - superb. It's a pity he didn't take the part when he was offered it to replace Connery in 1968. Or again in 1979/80. What would have become of the series had that happened? I always enjoyed Roger Moore's performances, but harder edged Bonds in that era with Dalton...I wonder.

I've often thought that Bond might be good for a period-set TV series - maybe they could do some of the ACTUAL plots from the Fleming novels!

DC is coming back for Bond one more time, I'm quiet happy he is doing one more. As for me he is the best modern day bond.

The ironic thing is Goldeneye and Casino Royale were directed by the same guy. He saved the franchise twice. Every movie after his have been less good.

They should bring him back if not Nolan.

Didn't DC say he wasn't going to do another Bond?

He did. Said he'd rather cut his wrists after finishing Spectre. Turns out, he always wanted to do another, he just wanted a break from it.

So an extra year break and a large sack of money to help him forget his urge for self mutilation.

I'll not be bothering with Bond until Craig and the writing team that have written the last few, have gone.

Moonraker! That is Literally one of the worst Bond Movies of all time. A cynical attempt to cash in on Star Wars mania.

Agreed. It was poor. For Your Eyes Only was the last of Moore's better Bond films, even though he was already too old by that point, let alone Octopussy and View to a Kill, which sucked just as much as Moonraker did.
