A long time ago when they were not half the financially successful company they have become in the past few years.

I just cannot see how Volta won't improve on Pascal. Even if there are very small improvements in architecture, the fact that there is big node jump should allow they for a nice improvement in performance. Plus they will hopefully be using GDDR6.
