McLaren 570S

but how do they justify this cost? a bottle of synthetic motor oil is still $50. so are they jacking up the oil filter?

Never owned a 200MPH capable car but I'd imagine it's service would involve a lot more than dropping the oil and changing the filter. If I sold 200MPH capable cars I would be inspecting for damage and road worthiness at every opportunity. Imagine a suspension failure at those kinds of speeds.

Yes 75% of the service cost is probably profit, but at this end of the market you have to suck up big bills.

The user can't actually access the engine bay on a 570S, all they can do is top up oil level and washer levels.

I doubt it would be more extensive than up on a lift, remove the undertray and then have access to everything to do an O+F?

What a pointless debate - anyone who can afford a 570S isn't going to give a toss about dealer servicing costs.

What a weird thing to say? Generally most of them do care about getting fleeced as they spend their careers doing the exact opposite, which is why they can afford one...

How many people are really buying brand new McLaren supercars and then doing their own oil and filters?

None, but that wasn't the point. The point is reputable independents will do it for a fraction of the cost, because it is a job that is so easy you could do it yourself if you wanted.

Actually that was exactly my point. The type of person who drops the thick end of £200k on a supercar will get their car serviced by a main dealer and not give a hoot about saving a few hundred quid by going to an independent, let alone doing it themselves! Quite apart from not caring about the money, in this market it pays to maintain a relationship with the dealer, not cut them out to try to save a few quid.

Can't help wondering why the warranty is voided if you track it given the only sane place to exploit its potential is on a track....

iirc on the McLarens the warranty is kept in-tact if it goes for a pre&post track service/inspection?

Could be wrong though

realistically, how long does cars like the McLaren last? can it get pass 100K with that $2K per year maintenance?

Not a chance. Our MP4-12c had over $100k in warranty work done in 18 months of ownership. Exotics need a sizeable reserve fund to be safely run to that mileage. You can get lucky, some of mine have required very little over the years, but on all of them, I’m always prepared for that $50k bill around the corner.

It remains to be seen what McLaren will be like long term. They are still a relatively young company so there are very very few independents who can actually work on anything. As I understand it, the dealers like to replace rather than repair which is obviously fine if you're under warranty but not so good if you're outside.
