The cure for Man Flu?

Bit sexist this, gender-neutral flu surely?

Just stick tissue up your nose, take some drugs and sleep if you can. Only other option is to make sure EVERYONE knows you have it, the more people that know helps cure it.

If it's a cold, fluids and OTC drugs like paracetamol or aspirin. Or placebo if you like - I find that Beecham's Powders works better than aspirin and caffeine even though I know it's just aspirin and caffeine and a smell. It's an excuse for alcohol too - hey, alcohol is an antiseptic, right? Must be medicinal. It'll kill the germs in your throat. Not really, of course, or at least not usefully.

If it's flu, serious medical advice would be in order because flu can kill you. It gets on my nerves when people call a cold flu - it's like calling a sleeping house cat a pack of rabid sabre-toothed tigers.

If it's some sexist burbling designed to ridicule men who are ill and prevent them getting any help, then the problem is much more difficult to deal with than either a cold or flu.

Over the years, I had real flu definitely once, knocked me bandy, fortunately my girlfriend at the time, now my ex wife, made Florence Nightingale look like a willing amateur.
Lots of fluids, chicken soup, tender ministrations, soothing my fevered brow etc., even helping me sweat it out once or twice, while carefully riding me to heaven, (excellent medication, providing it doesn't hurt).
I vaguely recall possibly having the real thing at one other time, but usually I just got man flu after that.
All this man flu stuff was consigned to history the day that I became self-employed, who you gonna call to say that you won't be in, yourself?
Not going to work equalling not getting any dough, is a magic cure.

Its its a cold its a new virus every time, so you body just has to do its thing and expel it.
You can deffo take stuff that help control the symptoms, line Benylin 4 Flu and Uniflu etc.
If you develop a cough the non-productive ( dry cough, no "lung butter"), take something like Pholcodine.

This forum doesn't do sarcasm  they have no idea what it is.

Brandy - followed by more brandy followed by a lot more brandy helps.

Man flu is serious.

When i'm full of cold I make hot drinks with boiled water, lemon juice, a crushed or thinly sliced clove of garlic and local honey

Any honey is great IMO, but if you live in Poland, local honey would probably be best.
Just as chicken soup is known as Jewish penicillin, honey is considered as similar in Poland I think.
I had a Polish girlfriend for a long time, her mother prescribed honey for any ailment you had, colds, cuts, bruises, headaches etc.

Honey does have some effect as an antibiotic...but that's irrelevant since colds are caused by a virus.

As an interesting aside, the viruses that cause a cold in humans do no harm at all to humans. None of the symptoms of a cold are caused by the virus. They're caused by your own immune system. That could be a lot worse - your immune system is easily capable of killing you extremely quickly (and does kill a surprisingly large number of people).

There is no cure other than rest and time. The common cold and influenza are viruses and they just have to run their course.

I've had it maybe twice, once when I was a kid (kept passing in and out of consciousness, hallucinations, can still remember the visions) and definitely once as an adult couldn't even get out of bed for two weeks right over christmas too. I can see how it could finish off the elderly.

No such thing as man flu.

Obviously there is because women don't suffer from it :p

To all the people saying man up and go into work...

I hate it when someone comes into a busy office coughing and sneezing passing it on to everyone in the place (it's even worse if it is an open plan office and there is air conditioning).

Ah the delights of sick pay and not having to go in (which I don't get).

I just had to take two days off sick with some virus or other, the symptoms were basically like a baseball bat hit me in the back of the head. Stuffed sinuses, screaming tinnitus, entire left side of my head in pain due to the build up, no balance, one moment freezing cold and then dripping in sweat.

Can't say I've been taken out that badly in a long long time.

After two days (which I still begrudge losing but I couldn't even get out of bed) I stumbled down to the chemist and he recommended Day & Night Nurse capsules, can't say if they worked but I made it to work today.

Admittedly, I came home and forced a sandwich down... then spent the night bringing back the little I've had for the past three days.

And now I can't sleep so I'm posting here at 4am, I don't know if it's the hunger or what... :(

Not a terribly successful man-up on all accounts. :p
