17 year old (Almost 18), new job, looking for a car

Some people like fixed cost motoring. Makes it a lot easier to plan your money.

You can lease some nice cars, with low deposits keep for 2 years then assess your situation and go from there.
so he's going to need what..

1200-1400 as a deposit and 200 or so a month for lease.

over two years that is

6.2k to lease a base spec city car?

add another 4-5k for insurance over that time and it's

12k ish gone on first car which is still boring and slow and low spec.

if you want a base city car it would most likely be a lot cheaper, and insurance would be cheaper than an old car in many cases

17 year old with a new job being recommended leasing... WTF is going on in here?

OP, it's insurance that's going to cost you. I doubt you'd even get insurance on a new car at your age. Find the nearest car to you that's under budget, has decent bodywork and 12 months on its MOT and rag the living crap out of it. That's what being 17 is all about, not getting yourself into thousands in debt in case something goes wrong with a used car.

He said he wanted a lease, that's the main reason I said go for it.

Insurance tends to be cheaper on newer cars also which would also help him.

Yeah, let's recommend putting a 17 year old in debt. Lmao.

Just get a cheap car with cheap insurance and rag the *******. If you ding it (which you inevitably will), you won't feel bad because it's a banger. You're too young to be getting into debt over something as trivial as a car. By the time you can afford a decent car with a low premium (in your mid 20s), you won't have been screwed over with debt and have more money.

If you were to get a cheap, small engine Vauxhall, Suzuki, Fiesta, etc. The maintenance, running costs and insurance will all be cheap. It'll get you from A2B and none of them are so offensive you won't be grabbing puss in them.

Old jap car sounds the best option, enjoy the liberation of something that'll cost pittance to buy and maintain. You can even do work on it yourself to save costs.

Insurance will be the killer, always is at this age, best thing to do is just suck it up and serve your time in a cheap econobox and save the leasing/cash for when you can afford something nice.

Hell i still wish i hadn't traded in me old skoda when i bought the bm, itd do 65mpg and you didnt have to worry about scratches or anything like that just hop in and rag it.

Lease car does not guarantee trouble free motoring, I had more issues with my brand new Toyota in the first year of ownership than I did with my second hand Nissan over the 4 years I had it. The Nissan just had routine service and MOT, the Toyota had new gearbox, new battery, rust forming on the window pillars and an ECU safety recall. Yes I didn't have to pay for any of those repairs but I was still late for work a few days with the dead battery having to jump a brand new car and extra time trying to get repairs done on the rest.

OP sounds like your current gen of 17-21 year olds that will not drive anything if it isn't brand new or German. They treat cars like mobile phone contracts and only look at the monthly payment rather than the fact they are spending 5-6k over 2 years with nothing to show for it because that's the way there parents live with everything on the monthly or credit.
I worked with a guy who was 18 and had only been in the job 1 month decided to get a 2 year lease under his mums name for £180 per month then got let go a few months later because he was crap so ended up jobless with a 2 year contract to pay for.
How do you know your apprenticeship will work out OP? And don't apprenticeships normally pay poor while your training? How are you going to get say a A class or 1 series which will be around £250 per month and then the same for insurance at your age. That's £500 then you have petrol and tyres etc

That makes no sense, you're still paying for the depreciation plus the leasing companies profit margin.

Spend 2-3k on somthing small and ideally Japanese and it will probably cost you next to nothing for a couple of years and then get something nicer once you've finished your apprenticeship and will know what you want.

Toyota Yaris, Nissan Micra, Suzuki Swift, Honda Jazz/Civic etc

I concur. This is generally the best option to start out.

Don't listen to these guys, get a nice new MY2017 Corsa 1.2 Sri. Slap some banging subs in the back, put it on bags, get some 17" Wolfrace multifits and make sure the arch gap never exceeds 1". Stretch some tiny little tyres (just get the cheapest you can find) and if possible turn the camber in so that you never have more than 2mm of contact patch. For that extra pussy magnettyness, stick a bonnet bra on it and cover one front wing in stickers. You can go even further by hanging a keychain from the rear tow hook so when you're doing some sik driftz in your FWD car people can see your angles (you may want to pick up some mcdonalds cup holders and stash them in your boot, these can be placed under your rear wheels to assist with those drifts).

You should be able to finance all this over 60 months at 24.5% apr.

Genuine LOL from me :D

At 17 i was grateful i could have a car no matter new or old i bloody loved my 1.2 fiat punto. I learnt a lot about how cars they worked and how to maintain them. at 25 my current car is only two years old but im in a completely different set of circumstances now with a good paying job and i dont have to worry about any issues day to day. Doesn't mean i would have swapped my powerhouse of a punto when i was 17. Insurance was 1500 quid with a black box from what i hear now insurance has gone through the roof for new drivers.
