17 year old (Almost 18), new job, looking for a car

Don't listen to these guys, get a nice new MY2017 Corsa 1.2 Sri. Slap some banging subs in the back, put it on bags, get some 17" Wolfrace multifits and make sure the arch gap never exceeds 1". Stretch some tiny little tyres (just get the cheapest you can find) and if possible turn the camber in so that you never have more than 2mm of contact patch. For that extra pussy magnettyness, stick a bonnet bra on it and cover one front wing in stickers. You can go even further by hanging a keychain from the rear tow hook so when you're doing some sik driftz in your FWD car people can see your angles (you may want to pick up some mcdonalds cup holders and stash them in your boot, these can be placed under your rear wheels to assist with those drifts).

Get yourself a budget and stick with it. Whatever you pay for a car at your age you will pay about the same in insurance, quite often more in some cases.
You have the chance to rack up some no claims bonuses so don't drive like a tool (until you can afford to). Limit the engine size to 1.2

Old Japanese is a good shout as is Ford.
Tyres, brake discs and pads and exhausts is where your money will go.

Get something unusual for a first car and sometimes you can actually save money. An old Mondeo 1.8 isn't a regular first car choice so could end up cheaper than a corsa, fiesta etc. Even something like a Honda Accord or Toyota Avensis could save you a bit and while dull will be reliable.

To help you out a bit, do quotes on USwitch, put that the car is on the road (sometimes driveway is cheaper), add a parents onto the policy.

The cheapest cars I found to insure were: Toyota Yaris 05+ and Aygo 05+

This is what you want. I had a £100 car as my first, it was great. I wasn't scared of denting it, scratching it. I learned how to handbrake turn. I also learned how much it ****ing hurts when you hurl it into a lampost. But it also taught me how to control understeer (mismatched tyres, in the rain isn't recommended), general day to day care of a car, and some simple mechanics.

Buy cheap, have less worries.

Alternatively, Autotrader, within, say, 50 miles, under 100k miles, £1k-£2k, search and see what takes your fancy. Local to me I found an '02 plate Ford Focus 1.8 with 45k miles (!) for £750! It was even a nice colour, looked pretty clean and apparently had no advisories on its last four MOT's!

Getting a new car as your first car is for daddy's girls. Nearly everyone I knew growing up, and now through work has had a bump or crash within a year or two of passing their test.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201708298783661 no visible rust and At least in the pictures the wings look solid. Surprising what you can get for a bag of sand.

I vote let him get what he wants, he will either do well in his job and be ok, or will learn a very harsh life lesson.

My first car was a £300 106 and it was dire, but I enjoyed it

The 1.5d 106's were really popular with young drivers when I was in my late teens.....have yet to experience a slower mode of transport!

OP wisen up about real world costs (spend it on booze/women/men/combo), either buy something really cheap but with a relatively high chance if being reliable (Japanese and or simple) or find a year old dirt cheap car like one of the little 108 / citygo or the likes and get a loan - neither is likely to get anywhere near the cost of leasing a Corsa or similar over a two year term

OP sounds like your current gen of 17-21 year olds that will not drive anything if it isn't brand new or German. They treat cars like mobile phone contracts and only look at the monthly payment rather than the fact they are spending 5-6k over 2 years with nothing to show for it because that's the way there parents live with everything on the monthly or credit.
I worked with a guy who was 18 and had only been in the job 1 month decided to get a 2 year lease under his mums name for £180 per month then got let go a few months later because he was crap so ended up jobless with a 2 year contract to pay for.
How do you know your apprenticeship will work out OP? And don't apprenticeships normally pay poor while your training? How are you going to get say a A class or 1 series which will be around £250 per month and then the same for insurance at your age. That's £500 then you have petrol and tyres etc

No actually I dont need anything brand new or German, I have been looking at a lot of things, just realised the financial state I will be in is good enough to theoretically afford a more 'premium' car lease. Also, my parents own the house and both their cars and were my age now when I was born and never got gifted anything just to clear that up.

I am going into the apprenticeship as a second year as I already have my qualifications for a 1st year, and by the end of the apprenticeship I will have an HND in Mechanical Engineering, and there is a guaranteed position at the end, and I know I am no little slob, I've worked my arse off for everything I have, and it is the position I have worked my arse off through school for getting A's and I plan to make it last. That is like saying if you lost your job tomorrow what would you do? You would go and get another one... Just because of my age has no impact on my ability to earn, it is a well paid area I am going into.

Albeit I do see all your points about paying all that money out and not actually getting anything in return at the end of it, getting a loan for a car and paying that off monthly sounds more applicable, like the 2011 Corsa that DAIR posted, atleast I actually keep the car afterwards and get to sell it on. Its just finding the right car to do it with really.
