Pewdiepie racism

The kids find it entertaining. Its almost more about the personality of the person "presenting" rather than the game.

No almost about it, there are literally tens, if not hundreds of thousands of videos of the same game on the tube yet the kids watch pewdiepie, they obviously enjoy him.

As for the "waste of life" argument, how about Love Island? Big Brother? I'm a celebrity? The latest one, "Bromans"? All drivel of the highest order, stuff that makes me cringe yet people love it. Different strokes I suppose.

I must say I do find it a bit odd that we've literally watched pewdiepie grow up for the last 7 years. Dunno why, just feels odd.

As for the video, I thought it was a storm in a teacup but having watched the video, it's very clear that this is something he probably does very regularly when not on camera but just let one slip this time. It just came so naturally to him. I can't say I'm bothered tbh, but then very few things offend me. I do however think he's way out of place to behave like that as there will be people who get offended by it.

As for his future? Who knows? Google might cut him loose, but regardless of what happens, he's just got some serious press exposure and that's always good for business, but he's also a hot potato at the moment so who knows. Time will tell I guess.

i'm amazed that some people are defending this - he even used it as an insult.
A lot of careers have been destroyed for a lot less than this.

its going to be interesting how the game companies react to this - depends on the public backlash.

How are the companies gunna react ? Why would pewdiepie care? He clearly buys his own games and plays them when he feels like. The only thing he should care about is his fans and he has so many that a few k of upset ones going for a run with matter. The publicity will bring more ££ than anything else.

well, i'm assuming that they could legally stop him streaming their games if he is damaging their brand.
whether they want to do that depends how toxic his own brand becomes - this incident might not be enough.
He's seemingly a relatively intelligent guy - he should know better and should be more aware of what he's doing (and no, i don't believe he did this on purpose).

You can certainly issue a DMCA takedown notice, the Firewatch dev already has which means all his old videos regarding Firewatch get removed from the sites.

Regardless of whether he pays for the games himself, he is generating income by playing someone elses work and the creator of that content has the right to decide if they are happy associating their creations with this person.

On the n word. I've seen the n word used when racism was absolutely the intention. The white confederate guy would have had the black guy picking cotton if he could.

People using the n word casually or joking or stereotyping is not the same. If you asked them if they really wanted the black guy to be a slave they'd say no.

If you struggle to see the difference go to a confederate state and see it for yourself.

If you call someone racist who isnt racist youre like the boy who cried wolf. When there's actual racism nobody will believe you.

The problem being that it normalises racism, and so it's harder to spot the actual racism because it's easier to dismiss it as the "casually or joking or stereotyping" racism which you seem to think is OK.

If you let someone with a massive audience of very impressionable young people use racist language unchecked (which was intended as an insult at the very least), what does that say about society?

like others have said, if blacks through it around ever other line in songs [using the term loosely] and films, they can't really complain when it becomes part of the public consciousness and others use it; they're the ones making it socially acceptable to use ~ and that's using it in both a companiable sense and an insulting sense. same goes for all words/insults.

If he's as big as reported he'll be getting sponsorship from the games and hardware companies and probably "press" accounts with the likes of Steam.

If the games companies take offence at what he's said they'll dissociate themselves from him, cutting off advanced access to games and any sponsorship, which I suspect will make up a large part of his income.

IMO - nothing. But if you tell people they CANT say things unless you think its okay - that's a terrible message to send to young people.

Anyway, he is clearly a complete idiot and kids *should* have better things to do than watch some fool play games. Watching someone else play single player video games for hours on end is on another level of passivity and mind-numbing waste that I just cannot comprehend.
I'd probably prefer kids to watch someone playing a game than a lot of celeb TV ;)

I know a few people who watch such playthroughs for the commentary and to laugh at the players (or because they themselves don't have time to play it properly), often whilst doing something else in the same way people have the TV on in the background.
