So, driving home the other day, nice quiet dual carridgeway.

Cruising along at 70, come up behind an audi a6, move out to overtake, audi speeds up.

So, i'm cool with this, as long as i'm cruising along not that fussed if he wants to be in front so i pull in behind.

Aaand he slows down to 60, so again i pull out (still cruising) and once again he's speeding up to stop me going past.

Rinse and repeat about half a dozen times before the end of it

So why the hell do people do this? Seriously? It would be of zero hindrance to him if i'd passed him, and zero hindrance to me if he'd decided he'd rather stay in front and move along at the same rate, but for some reason he decided he didnt want me in front of him but neither did he want to maintain speed.

Why not just stay in the outside lane?

1. I'm trying to break the stereotypical bmw driver image :p
2. Every time i pulled out he'd speed up and keep station ahead of me until i figured "ok, so he's gonna stay there" and pulled back in.

Tbh i could have (and im sure some would say should have) just dropped a gear and put him in his place, i suppose if i wasnt in a relatively mellow mood i might have.

It wasnt just me, after a few miles a focus caught up with us (yes the road really was that empty) and he got the same treatment.

Most of whom seem to drive Audis...
I'd love to argue that it's not, but even this morning I had the usual "flash flash flash flash" how dare you have overtaken me perfectly safely when I'm doing 40MPH in an NSL in my brand new A4 diesel.

I think its become the way now that its about 50/50 between audi and bmw, specifically a4-6 diesels and 320d/520d/x3/5's being noteworthy.

It's odd I find it's women drivers in the van. There doing 60 ish I'm limited to 70, I catch them up and overtake. Next lorry I overtake they fly past overtaking us both until 1/4 mile down the road and they're doing 60 again.

Had one that was doing 50 mph on a dual carriageway, I had a trailer on the back of the hilux and was near my maximum limit. I over took her and did the above. She then decided to brake check me... warped both front brakes..

I hate driving near women especially if they have what they think is an expensive /prestigious car! Look love over a million German cars are sold in the UK a year your base spec 1 series ain't special.

If the road was that empty, i would have just sat in the outer lane until he decided to continue at the same speed, or give up and let you pass.

I remember driving back late a couple of months ago on the M5, cruising around 80, i passed a merc who must have been doing about 60-65. When i eventually moved back into the inside lane, about 30 seconds later he put his foot down and flew past me (must have accelerated upto 100). Obviously thought nothing of it, figured if he wants to go that fast then let him get on with it. Anyway he disappeared into the distance, and after about 5 miles i come across him again doing about 60-65. Effectively rinse and repeat the above about 4 times until i saw he came off at a junction.

Half the time i think people just bait you for a bit of a race on an empty road.

Had one yesterday. Taxi driver in a merc. In a 30 zone he was sat right up my chuff the whole way whilst I had my cruise set at 32. We then hit a dual lane stretch where the limit is still 30 and he moves past me at a fair pace. This 30 stretch then becomes a 60 and i nearly go in the back of him as hes doing 40! I overtake safely and he starts flashing the lights etc. We hit a 30 again and I slow down and he's back up my arse.

one of the reasons for a powerful car - go to overtake and if they decide to be a prat and speed up you can still out accelerate and get in front ;) and back down to cruising speed easily/safely. Non dual carriageway it can be quite unsafe if they start to accelerate, you're left exposed for way longer than ideal/planned, so surely better to just be able to blast in front with a suitable throaty noise :D

I got a lift off my boss the other week who did this and it was infuriating. He'd do 70 on the dot until he came to a vehicle in front then he'd overtake everything in that "block" at about 80-85 then pull back in to 70. So odd.

If the traffic you're overtaking is moving slower than your cruising speed then this is not the wrong way to overtake. Speeding up to ensure the overtake is completed quickly and safely is no bad thing at all.

On a dual carriageway with little traffic I don't think its relevant.

Still hardly infuriating??? Just a good habit to get into really.

The Highway Code even says you should "move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking".

TBH I usually find Insignia (almost always in Black) drivers the worst. It's almost like they feel they've got something to prove, like there's a little voice in the back of their head saying "It's not your fault your [boss/wife] wouldn't let you have an [Audi/BMW]. And the Insignia is a good car. You need to show them. Show them it isn't inferior, in any way".

It's far from all Insignia drivers, or even the majority. But the capacity for being a complete tool seems somewhat higher in that car, like overtaking in to oncoming traffic proves something to everyone around.

It's Ego. Audi and BMW drivers on the motorway are the worst I don't care what anyone says. They simply don't want to be overtaken by a lesser cheaper car. They like to think there leased 170bhp s line/ m Sport is rapid because it has a bodykit and 19 inch rimz on and just can't accept people blasting past them I see it all the time.

Nah, on the motorway 9 times out of 10 the ones stuck to my arse and doing 90~ are the blond teenage/early twenties women in inappropriate city cars.
