Just... Why...

It is relevant. Are you one of those annoying people that will overtake so slowly that it takes half a mile for you to get past?
If there are cars behind going faster and catching up then obviously i'll speed up. If there isn't why would I bother? I'll keep my cruise set and carry on as I was.

Still hardly infuriating??? Just a good habit to get into really.

The Highway Code even says you should "move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking".

I'm sure you abide by the Highway Code to the letter at all times. I guess you've never been over 70mph either?

I am one of these annoying people that (mostly) obey the speed limit and if it takes me a while to overtake someone who I've caught up with then so be it.

What I tend to find is that I catch people up relatively quickly (because they're going slowly) and they only realise they're going slowly when someone overtakes them, so they speed up a bit. THESE are the really annoying (any frankly, bad) drivers.

If the road was that empty, i would have just sat in the outer lane until he decided to continue at the same speed, or give up and let you pass.

Half the time i think people just bait you for a bit of a race on an empty road.

I did, each time i was out for long enough to think "well, looks like he's settled down now" when i pulled back in.

one of the reasons for a powerful car - go to overtake and if they decide to be a prat and speed up you can still out accelerate and get in front ;) and back down to cruising speed easily/safely. Non dual carriageway it can be quite unsafe if they start to accelerate, you're left exposed for way longer than ideal/planned, so surely better to just be able to blast in front with a suitable throaty noise :D

I agree and that's my principle on single lane roads is i drop the boot to the floor till i'm passed (usually in much less distance than i actually need, but tbh that's better than a head on collision)

This dual carridgeway was literally empty though, me, mr audi, and mr focus were the only 3 cars in sight the whole length of it, hence i wouldnt have an issue with a snail overtake. (Not that it would have been if he'd stuck to 60 which was evidently the speed he wanted to go)

It's Ego. Audi and BMW drivers on the motorway are the worst I don't care what anyone says. They simply don't want to be overtaken by a lesser cheaper car. They like to think there leased 170bhp s line/ m Sport is rapid because it has a bodykit and 19 inch rimz on and just can't accept people blasting past them I see it all the time.

Seems it, i suspected it was a case of "i aint bein overtaken by no bleedin beemer" so when the focus showed up i let him past me to see if he got any luck, but he got given the same treatment.

Ironic really, bmw driver not wanting to drive like a tool to show up an audi driver who's being a tool, was i right to aim for the moral high ground?

I've had people tailgate me when I'm doing 70 on the motorway when there is clearly an opportunity for them to overtake, yet they are flashing their lights at me, these kind of people annoy me to no end.

Also had people driving at 50mph in the middle lane so when I go and overtake and come back in to the middle lane back at 70 they want to speed up and tailgate me.

The worst thing is people who never signal.

I've noticed this more since I've gone back to a smaller car (Abarth 500) I'll pass someone doing 40 on a NSL and suddenly because my little car has past them they find where the accelerator is and then proceed to sit on my bumper and / or try going for a unsafe overtake to get back in front.

I see this sort of thing happening fairly often. People just seem to have a problem being overtaken which is weird, especially when they're not even doing the speed limit. One that always annoys me is when you're on an NSL single carriageway road and you get to someone doing 40mph (always happens, always, but why do these people always seem to sit at 40 on the nose?) even though the road is clear with good visibility. I overtake when it's safe to do so, I leave a nice big gap before pulling back in and still get the ol' double flash. Why? Just because you want to drive 20mph under the limit for no good reason it doesn't mean I have to do the same.

I'm sure the car you're driving does have something to do with it for some reason I can't quite fathom. I drive quite a lot of miles a year and used to have problems with Audis very regularly when I was driving a Fiesta. Since I got a 3 series (only a 320d, so not exactly fast) I've not really had any issues with Audis in recent months but for some reason I am finding a lot of Vectra drivers are tools these days. Of course it could be coincidence, but on the days I drive the S-Max around (not often admittedly, but it does happen) I usually always end up with multiple people pulling out on me and other general moronic activity on any journey I make involving the A3.

Its more noticeable when your using cruise, the amount of people that speed up when you overtake them and then slow down again when you drop in behind them is stupid. I just want to engage cruise and get on with the journey.

I guess it's psychological, people don't want to be a 'mobile chicane' so speed up to stop themselves becoming one, but slowly drift back down in speed without realizing.

The other day I was in the overtaking lane, overtaking, as you do. It was an average speed mway and I had no intention of getting a ticket so I was passing another car fairly slowly (about 20 secs for the whole overtake) when this Q7 decides to stick his nose on my bumper. Eventually I move over and make a gesture that rhymes with anchor and he saw it. He almost lost control of his car trying to slow down, roll down his window and get his middle finger out fast enough because he obviously was an alpha male and he will not be made fun of. It was quite funny but very dangerous, he very nearly lost the Audi which would've resulted in one hell of a messy crash.

It's amazing how people are on the roads.

People do make using cruise control to stay at the speed limit incredibly difficult. I tend not to react to anyone too much though.

The obvious solution was to wait til he moves out to block the focus then pass on the left (completely legal if not speeding technically).

I assume there wasnt room for you to move over (to the left) either?

Actually I was encouraging people to go a little over 70mph in order to effect a clean, efficient and safe overtake. :p

i'll be honest driving a bmw seems to only get me sympathy from other bmw drivers, except 520d's who are a different breed apparently. tbf the badge has its reputation and i knew that when i bought it so i can't completely complain.

he wasn't pulling out to block, just staying in the left lane and speeding up to remain ahead of me/the focus when we tried to go past on the right (as is proper) and then slowing down when we pulled over.

i could have passed him by simply flooring it, but then that'd be me playing to the standard bmw stereotype :D

I think if it happens just once or twice it could easily be put down to the “didn’t realise how slow they were going” and readjustment to the speed limit, but that’s taking the biscuit.

That sort of thing frustrates me a bit, especially when they vary their speed significantly (20km/mpg difference on a straight, flat road) as you can’t use cruise when sat behind them. I’m that situation I normally just get past them as quick as possible.

One solution would have been not to make hand gestures in the first place. Why did you feel the need to do so?
