Just... Why...

The other day I was in the overtaking lane, overtaking, as you do. It was an average speed mway and I had no intention of getting a ticket so I was passing another car fairly slowly (about 20 secs for the whole overtake) when this Q7 decides to stick his nose on my bumper. Eventually I move over and make a gesture that rhymes with anchor and he saw it. He almost lost control of his car trying to slow down, roll down his window and get his middle finger out fast enough because he obviously was an alpha male and he will not be made fun of. It was quite funny but very dangerous, he very nearly lost the Audi which would've resulted in one hell of a messy crash.

It's amazing how people are on the roads.

lol, you make such a gesture at someone and they’re the childish one for responding in kind?!

When being overtaken by someone in a rage I contort my expression into a huge overbite and sit bolt upright with my face as close to the windscreen as possible as they pass, I don't look at them but stare straight forward whilst trying to maintain the same ridiculous driving position.

Sounds daft but this really cheers me up every time!

Try spending all day like this driving an hgv. As soon as literally everyone sees what is trying to pass them they speed up. Useless.

There is a white 135i that does this around Telford. I have come across him twice and both times he has driven trying to evidence just how small his willy is. I have not given him the pleasure and last time he was flashing cars out the way so he could get to me. Frankly he needs pulling from his car and slapping for being a silly billy but I am too much of gentleman for such things. Tools will be tools, they have to make up for something missing in their lives, usually penis size or women but also brains....or all 3.

I get this sometimes whilst on my motorbike. It’s usually the yobs driving Focus ST or some form of sport version of their German pride and joy that insist on not letting anyone get ahead.

What they forget is there are always faster vehicles so it’s pointless even trying to play the “I’m going to put accelerate you if you try an overtake” game. Pretty much anything less than a hyper car is slower than most big bikes, yet they’ll still try to win the race.

Only yesterday I signalled to overtake someone, pulled out and the car in lane 2 continued to speed up until I was alongside. I looked in through his window and shook my head... then passed him

i'm surprised they try that with motorbikes, given how you don't need to look hard to find most motorbikes will leave your average car in the dust.

I'd love to argue that it's not, but even this morning I had the usual "flash flash flash flash" how dare you have overtaken me perfectly safely when I'm doing 40MPH in an NSL in my brand new A4 diesel.

Double-whammy there - arrogant Audi driver combined with "anyone with a faster car than me is a maniac" mentality.

Exactly. Mine would do 0-60 in 3.2s (not a sports bike either), but it’s like they want to beat physics?

one of the reasons for a powerful car - go to overtake and if they decide to be a prat and speed up you can still out accelerate and get in front ;) and back down to cruising speed easily/safely. Non dual carriageway it can be quite unsafe if they start to accelerate, you're left exposed for way longer than ideal/planned, so surely better to just be able to blast in front with a suitable throaty noise :D

Much more dangerous than the OP's situation and something I've encountered a few times over the years. It's nice to be able to put your foot down even further if the person your overtaking decides too.

I tend to overtake quickly anyway, so if they decide to put their foot down as I'm coming past I already have a lot more momentum then they do.

Ha ha ha! Brilliant! I’m going to do that next time I meet an Alpha Rager.

i've only ever had it once, merge after a roundabout, me in the right hand lane with a lorry, a volvo and a blue mondeo in the left lane.

i judged that trying to push forward to get in front of the volvo would be cutting it too close and was unsafe, so i indicated and moved to pull in behind him only to find the mondeo had moved right up the volvo's backside and the driver staring at me with an expression of "**** you you aint getting my space", so i had to put my foot down to get in front of the volvo (which a few seconds before i'd considered dodgy) which thankfully my car was fast enough to do before ending up in the oncoming queue of traffic.

one of those "wish i was a peeler" moments.

my situation in the op though wasn't in any way dangerous, just pointless attempt at annoying me by the audi.

i will admit i agree, i have no sympathy at all for anyone who tries to speed up when being overtaken on a single lane road, should be legal to ram people off the road then claim on their insurance if they do this.

be careful of doing that because it drives me into a rage too........... never make a sign at another driver, just swear under your breath......be wise, there are some real NUTTERS out there.

I got a lift off my boss the other week who did this and it was infuriating. He'd do 70 on the dot until he came to a vehicle in front then he'd overtake everything in that "block" at about 80-85 then pull back in to 70. So odd.

This sounds perfectly acceptable to me. If hes going at 70 and is approaching another car then that obviously means the other car is going slower than 70. It should be habit to get the overtake done quickly as to not hold up any other traffic travelling faster than you also. Doesnt matter if there is nobody else on the road, it is a good habit to have. I bet it infuriates you when you are travelling faster than other traffic trying to do an overtake then there is somebody pootling along in the outside lane carrying out the slowest overtake ever recorded and you're stuck behind them for miles when if they just sped up that extra 10mph it would have been over in seconds.
