DIY Kitchens... still the best value for money?

Uhhhh @PFarrey to be cheeky for a while and sorry Op for hijacking.. but that design you posted looks absolutely awesome, and we're in the market for a new kitchen...*cough :D.

RE: cooker hoods height

I'm the same as you 6ft 1" and sick and tired of banging my head on the damn hood that I mounted at 750mm above the gas stove. My hood looks very similar to the one you posted, but my question is why not go for something like this?
I'm not a fan of the aesthetics of that style of hood and I'm wanting a more industrial look, but if you know of other ideas then I'll happily take some time to look through them.

Either that or if your budget would stretch, how about one of those downdraft extractors that pop up from behind the hob?
They waste masses of space in the units below, they don't work particularly well for the price they are and again, I'm not a fan of the aesthetics.

Not sure how good they are but Homebase / Bunnings now do Kit & Kaboodle kitchens, where they help design a kitchen and price it up as parts only for you to either fit yourself or sort your own fitter :)

Edit: Just realised you're not actually talking doing it DIY, but rather a website. I'll quietly sink back into the background now :D

Here is the space we've got to work with @PFarrey, let me know what you think!

The space marked kitchen and dining room (ignore the kitchen drawn on, thats just the architects rough idea) is 6265x3400. So the left side (as you look at it) of that entire space by the opening basically, if that makes sense.

Much appreciated!

That looks OK to work from. Do you have any preference for the style of the kitchen? Consider whether you want;

- Gloss
- Matt
- Handles
- Handle-less
- Contemporary
- Traditional

What is the requirement around appliances?

We're not sure on the whole handle/handless situation. I like clean/modern, my wife does to a certain extent, I think with the design of the house its likely that modern would fit better. Appliance wise, we're hoping for two full size single ovens, an integrated microwave, space for an integrated freezer, a large induction hob, a dishwasher, 1 and a half sink, think thats it..

We don't like gloss I think is the thing we definitely agree on :p. Many thanks :).

Just had mine delivered, my advice is pay for 2 man delivery especially if your 2nd man is your mrs! (I can deadlift near 200kg and it was tough!).

The Mrs was not happy! Struggled to get it in the house even tho kitchen is entrance area... The unboxing begins soon..

Sound advice. Was thinking I would solo at 16 unit delivery... Partner can't help as she is half my weight!

Tbh I could solo some of them, but the pan drawers are damn heavy and I have one 1000mm wide! I think the main issue is all my drawers are pan drawers...

Just seen your post is a 3 storey house... Do yourself a favour and pay the extra! My kitchen is immediately past porch and still wish I paid more... Or had mates round.

Gonna prob start at the weekend so won't know how difficult it is to put together until then!

Indeed, kitchen on first floor for me! Don't even have a plan where to.store it so day 0 most likely have to get it upstairs.

From what I read through, even with two man delivery they won't bring it upstairs right? Only into my front door and up a maximum of X steps.

My front garden alone has 8 steps to front door.

It probably depends how energetic your delivery guys are. We paid for 1 man delivery but fortunately due to the route we got 2 guys, one pushing cabinets around the van and the other helping to unload into the house. We had large openings and a room to store all the cabinets so unloading wasn't a problem but we heard a few horror stories of trying to negotiate 2m high cabinets up angled stair cases and 5m worktops around 180' door frames. Most cabinets are fine to move around but drawer units and worktops are very heavy and worth having a 2 man delivery just for those.

I had my kitchen delivered earlier this week and paid for the cheapest delivery. Also had 1 man in the van and 1 man to help unload. I roped my dad and GF in, but tbh, she wasn't able to carry/assist much as it was too heavy, so once the small items were in she just held doors open etc.

Worktops, drawer units and pan drawers are heavy - I ordered an 800mm pan drawer and pan drawer tall double oven unit! :(

I'd probably do the same again tbh, but would definitely suggest paying more if there aren't 2 strong people. Able and willing just isn't enough - if it was just the GF and I we wouldn't have managed.

Yup, echo these sentiments! I had 1000mm pan drawers altho the worst was the 2.3m tall one with pan drawers... We had 2 delivery blokes but they didn't seem to want to lend a hand! We had to draft in the in laws impromptu...

2 strong blokes would be fine tbh
