Router and Open VPN download speeds

I have PIA open vpn set up for NL on VuSolo2 STB and its giving download speeds of around 15mb/sec, when I disconnect from the vpn its giving me my normal 60+. If I connect my pc (not using Open vpn) to the same PIA NL I get around 60.

Been doing some digging and thinking, it could be my underpowered router modem.

if I keep my billion 8800 modem router, run it as a modem and add ASUS RT-N66U 802.11a/b/g/n, would this increase my download speeds via openvpn on the VuSolo?

Many thanks

Openvpn takes a lot of overhead and most normal routers especially in that price range haven't got the power to give you a better throughput.
A pfsense box will but this is complicated to setup I believe and I haven't tried yet.
Im using a raspberry pi as a VPN router but again I get a max of about 20mbs out of my 200mb connection

The Netgear R7000 is pretty damn good with a VPN connecting and AES-256 decryption when tho it is only a dual core CPU. Providing your connection isn't more than 60Mbs.
You do need a custom firmware for it, Asus-WRT Merlin being ported.

I still have one spare as I changed that to a Netgear R7800, with a dual core 1.7ghz powered CPU. This gives faster support and I use DD-WRT to configure my VPN client needs.

The R7000 seemed to have a stronger WiFi signal over that of the R7800.!

Both can be found at a good price when in sale.

A Linkysys WRT3200ACM or a 1900acs is also very powerful and very capable when being used as a VPN client, again when when used with AES-256 decryption. They have the ability to have dual firmwares, in case you fup one up. They are well supported with custom firmwares.

I tried pfsense but my feeble brain simply imploded.

You saved your account up for three years before posting.?!

Welcome

pfSense is actually relatively straight forward to get up and online. The initial wizard is helpful. Everything else after that takes some learning however there is some great stuff on YouTube and Reddit to help out.

i know nothing of a VuSolo box. How is it connecting to the PIA VPN? Something you're doing on the box itself or on your router? Reading around a little it seems you can configure OpenVPN directly on the VuSolo which is why I ask. If you're doing that then the reduction in speed is because that's as fast as the VuSolo can handle the VPN encryption as it will be doing the heavy lifting. Changing your router won't help unless you're also planning on connecting the VPN at the router and not the Vusolo box. That also potentially has the side effect of putting your whole network behind the VPN which may or may not be a good thing for you depending on what you want.

A pfSense box will be the best of all worlds with the power and configurability you probably need. a Mikrotik router is a cheaper alternative but I have no personal experience. there are threads on here recommending the right model.

+1 for pfSense. Get a box that supports AES-NI for maximum OpenVPN speeds. I use the Jetway JBC323 myself and can't recommend it enough. I also have a VuSolo, it just isn't up to running a VPN tbh, especially if it's already running OSCAM or MGCAM ;)

Many thanks for all your suggestions, more digging on my part to determine the best for me and within my price range.

Yes long time registered but now I am retired I should be around a lot more:-)

Looks like you have a good point, I did not realize OPENVPN was so processor heavy. Did you try running both, OPenvpn/MGCAM, if so any idea as to what download speed you were getting? Just checked turning off MGCAM added another couple of megs download speed on mine.

Yes currently running OPENVPN on the VUSolo2, my current Modem Router cannot run vpn hence my query. Reading your response and others, this is not going to be as easy as I thought. Currently checking out your suggestions many thanks

Looks like this maybe the way to go checking on prices etc now

I never tried running a VPN on mine tbh. Out of interest, why did you want to?

Finally went for Linksys 1900ACS, works well and manged to increase download speed on Vu Solo running OPENVPN by about 5 so now just under 20. Much better and limited buffering now.

Been watching pfSense videos on you tube and may well give that a go at some point by installing on an old laptop.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
