The PM has announced plans to follow Scotland and Wales in introducing an opt out scheme for organ donation, thereby placing everyone on the organ donors list unless they opt out.

As many of you may know, I suffer from serious heart problems so will need a new heart one day, so this is good news for me, but I’m interested in finding out your take on it. Would it be possible to have a poll please on if you agree with the opt out and if you are in or out with the options of:

Agree and IN
Agree but OUT
Disagree but IN
Disagree and OUT

Thanks.

Good.

I've been registered as a donor for as long as I can remember anyway but now live in Wales.

I fail to see how anyone can disagree with it. If you care enough to not want to donate you should opt out.

I've always though presumed consent was the way forward with organ donation and I've always been happy for them to take anything of mine that is of use when I die.

I agree but unfortunately I'm probably out due to a previous health issue (I also can't give blood). I used to carry a donor card in the past.

This should be an opt out and only based on medical exemption from a fully trained physician, no homeopathic or religious opt outs available.

It's funny she's come out with this considering corbyn said the same thing a few weeks back...

I agree, pretty sure I have opted in when getting a drivers licence anyway. I don't think anyone should have a personal opt out, there isn't a good enough reason to let a good heart go to waste.

About time really. This is a great step forward.

One concern is legal issues when passing away. If someone doesn't opt out and their belated family doesn't want to donate, what then?

I am somewhat worried it has not been thought through. Ultimately the medical professions are at the front line of this and have to deal with the "Why did you steal my dead mothers' organs" from a grief stricken relative. I think the current system of an explicit opt-in is better as it shows the person made an explicit choice.

Your relatives can still stop your organ donation, even with a valid organ donation card in your dead hand.

Simples. Just tell said grief stricken relative that their loved one obviously didn't feel strongly against organ donation otherwise they should have opted out. Getting all hung up about body parts that are just going to sit in the ground or burn isn't a valid reason to not save a life.

Presumably this can still be blocked by next of kin, as is the case with opting in at the moment?

Not sure where I stand on it, I've been a registered donor for organs, blood, and bone marrow since I was 18 and I appreciate the need for more organs etc. Having said that I would kind of prefer people to come to the decision on their own rather than because they were unaware that they were auto opted in to the scheme.

I suppose my stand point is Agree and In but with the caveat that I'd like the possibility of opting out to be very visible, and revisited at numerous points, e.g. a question when registering with a GP and then revisited 1 year after the decision is made when contacting your GP (e.g I filled in my registration paperwork 18 months ago including the opt out decision, I contacted the GP today for an appointment and they double checked my details including my willingness to donate).

Just when I thought the Daily Fail readership couldn’t get any worse, people are actually commenting that they don’t agree with it as they don’t want their organs going to immigrants. WTAF!

I don't want my organs going to people who watch TOWIE but I couldn't see a tick box for that on the form. I just had it tattooed on my chest so the first responders can see it.

They can take what they want as I am a registered donor, my body is also going to medical science on my death. Maybe there will be a scrap over who actually has first rights over my body. Why would I care I will be dead?

I would have issue with hardened criminals or those who are likely to abuse any organs given to them, (George Best). If I could opt in but exclude anyone with a conviction for violent/sex offences then great.

Doctors are unable to make any moral judgements on who to give organs to, but they are able to refuse if they are not confident the recipient will look after their organ properly. It’s not foolproof but it is there.

For those with a criminal record I would have thought it would be a fairly easy process to check before performing surgery.
