Organ Donation Opt Out, what say ye?

I disagree to an extent because I don't like the idea of govt not obtaining consent first.

However...... I do then agree on it because of how many people will be helped.

I somewhat disagree but i'm in.

I don't even know if I'm set up to donate, but would gladly give them to someone in need. Really should start to give blood too on that note.

I have always said when i die use my body for any form of science. I won't care what you do with me as i will be dead. ( but i would prefer something cool )

It should be:

-Everyone is a doner by default with an opt out system
-Family members unable to refuse on your behalf after your death if you never opted out
-Not opting out gives you a small priority over those who opt out should you need a transplant in the future

I would have issue with hardened criminals or those who are likely to abuse any organs given to them, (George Best). If I could opt in but exclude anyone with a conviction for violent/sex offences then great.

Yeah that's kind of my feelings as well.

If i died and no longer needed my organs then i'd be happy for someone who was either born with a condition, or had an illness that resulted in organ failure for example to have mine. I would be very unhappy for some mass murderer or an addict (alcohol/drug) who would just continuing abusing after getting a new organ.

I appreciate doctors can't make a judgement based on those lifestyle factors (criminal convictions mostly), but you can understand why people are reluctant to give up their organs.

Doctors are unable to make any moral judgements on who to give organs to, but they are able to refuse if they are not confident the recipient will look after their organ properly. It’s not foolproof but it is there.

Indeed, prioritisation should always be on clinical need and predicted outcomes. I think it's important to note that this is an organ donation. When you donate items to a charity shop you don't get to choose who can buy them - or indeed who the charity can assist with the proceeds.

Due to medical reasons, Out would be my only option. Not really bothered what happens to my body after I pass over as it is only the husk, nothing remains of the person

Well, if by default you can't donate, then you can't opt-out really :p

Basically if you have an opt out system and discourage people to opt out for no reason, i imagine that there should be plenty of tasty organs for everyone!

Opt out.

They can have all they want. Just leave something behind to bury/burn.

They take most of it out anyway when you die. Saves them a job of putting it back in again.

Anything but my eyes. Don’t ask why as I’m not even sure myself.

A lot of people think that way. Always wondered why it's the eyes specifically.

Personally I don't think anyone should be allowed to opt out. Once the person is dead there's no need to keep them whole if they can help another. It's just a sack of meat once the brain is dead.

I wonder how many who have died could have saved another person but didn't.

Far too many lives lost I imagine. As horrible as it sounds we put far to much sentiment into a dead body. Use parts, cremate and then celebrate the life of that person and the lives they could have potentially saved.

Also, parents should not have the right to refuse a proven and widely accepted treatment for a child whose life will be forfeited should treatment not be given unless it has significant effect on the child's quality of life.

So that is no refusal of blood transfusions because of the parent's religion.
No refusal of real medicine because of crap like homeopathy.
