mk5 golf gti - mod advice

I'm pretty sure that the Mk5 GTi uses the same 2.0TFSI engine that's in my Leon, and it's a cambelt and pulley system rather than chain.

At 109k miles though, it will be due a new belt, tensioner and waterpump soon.

The engine has both a chain and belt, the timing belt is on the left and a chain links the two cams on the right. It is a fairly common fault for the chain tensioner to fail causing a rattle once the engine is at running temperature.

If you are going for preventative maintenance you should change the blow off valve, cam follower and PVC valve all cheap and straight forward to replace.

Depends on the year, early ones are TFSI later ones are TSI engines.

The MK5 Golf GTI never got the TSI engine so all have a belt and chain. The TSI engine was introduced in the MK6 GTi and went to a full chain system but has a serious issue with the timing chain/tensioner which can cause total engine failure. If I bought one of these the first thing I would do is replace the chain and tensioner with the new revisions.

Yep you're right! Thought the very last of them had that engine!

Thanks for the info, DSG is due a service now so getting it booked in asap :)

Good man, as others have said the basics you will want doing are: Cam Follower, PCV Valve, Diverter Valve and DSG service before you start to Mod, as you are looking to go Stage 2 for the diverter valve i would recommend the GFB DV+ its about £90 and is fit and forget, for cam follower and PCV Valve go to your local stealer or TPS, I've just bought these myself and they are pretty cheap and easy to replace items.

Also for handling common mods are Anti-Lift Kit, RS3 Top mounts and Dogbone mount insert - that will help the car get its power down much much better than standard setup, which you will find does struggle even at stage 1, good tyres are also a must.

For stage 1 you don't need an intake or Cat replacement you can just go cat back exhaust and replacement panel filter. These engines can last for ages as long as they are looked after so going stage 2 should be fine even at that age and mileage - plenty have done it without issues but if there are any underlying problems they could rear there head after stage 1.

I actually had to replace the PCV valve on my Leon two weeks ago :D

If the car is being used on the track, you probably want to have the oil pickup checked in the sump for sludge too. A common area for issues on these engines too.

[Edit] This thread has reminded me to take a look at the diverter valve, I get a bit of a whistle when lifting off.

I own an Edition30. The advice on here is good. Cam Follower, PVC, Diverter valve, and oil pickup first. Also look out for rust on the front wings and sills.

I'm putting a BCS Powervavle catback on mine soon, Can't wait. I hope to R-Tech it sometime next year.

wings are fine but both sills need work doing to them at the front and a small issue at the back drivers side. looking about £600 for it to be done. Half tempted to save and have a complete respray done, then ceramic coat.
