Hi all

Got my hands on an old CAD PC from work, i7 920 @ 2.67, 12 GB.

For me to do a bit of CAD work from home and the odd bit of browsing, its fine as is, but... I think there's something up with the memory, there's actually 4x 6GB sticks in, Windows only recognising 12 GB, and only 6.99 is usable.

The mobo is Asus P6T, it says in the manual (if I'm reading it correctly) max is 12 GB I can have on this setup.

I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version from Asus, incase it was something to do with that, but still no joy.

Any help appreciated, tried the manual, but its a bit gobledegook to me.....

Thanks in advance,
N

(Sorry, might be in wrong thread).

How do you know what memory is in the PC?
The reason I say this is that as far as I am aware no one ever manufactured a 6GB stick. It sounds more like you have 6x4GB. Ish(!) ~ it's is also possible that the RAM is marked as 4GB but that is the kit size and not the stick size. Kits around then were sold as sets of two so that really means each stick is only 2GB. That would mean you actually have 3x4GB kits. 6 sticks that are 2GB each. 12GB installed and everything is working just fine. So I think the issue here is how the RAM has been marked.

Agreed with above however only 6.99 usable sounds a little odd.

Hughesey, can you report what the memory is reporting in performance monitor, i'm very interested to know Hardware Reserved, Standby, Modified, Free, and In use memory. Better still can you post a screen shot of this screen?

what generation and what version of windows? some versions limit amount of ram etc etc

Basically this. A lot of versions of windows have artificial caps on how much memory can be used IE 16GB might only pick up 8GB on some windows. And in that X amount will be allocated to windows so only X amount will be available to use.
