Hurricane Ophelia to Brush the Azores This Weekend; May Affect Ireland Next Week

yeah - nothing yet here (prestwick) - pretty timid still out there but supposed to crank up in the next hour or so. Thankfully the chap has just finished replacing my cracked windscreen!!

Easterly wind so it's coming off the land, I'm across in Kintyre and it's getting pretty rough.

Short story, end of the world.

Slightly less short story, it's sarahan sand and dust.

Long story (though feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), hurricanes are formed in the area around the Gulf of Guinea, picking up sand and **** from the Saharah and surrounding areas. This is pulled up to us via the now formed hurricane and floats around the atmosphere. The orange light is created via something called Rayleigh Scattering, it's the deflection of blue wavelengths in the visible spectrum which leaves the longer wavelengths hanging around, hence the orange type light. It's effectively what happens at sunset, right now we are in a middle of the day long winded high-light sunset. It's quite amazing!

I was at work this morning, could just about see the storm approaching as we flew from Edinburgh to London this morning out to the West. The whole of N/E Europe is full of really active storm cells but Ireland is getting a real battering, Cork airport was showing 60mph gusting 80!

I mean, what causes an orange sky?

A high particulate content in the high atmosphere causes the bluer end of the light spectrum to scatter because of it's shorter wavelength. The red end being of a longer wavelength is less affected, thus the effect we see is a shift in light colour towards the red. It also commonly occurs in precursors to snow storms depending on the prevalent direction of the front in relation to the position of the sun.

View from my office window right now...

I had to use a third-party camera app because the default iOS app refused to believe that this colour sky could exist.

Wow, so gorgeous
Nature reminds us how Mars looks like and if we aren't careful, we might get the same experience as on that planet :(

The winds are picking up here, but the skies are blue and the wind is really warm. Feels really weird outside.

Wind up now to over 120Kml on the Mid wales coast, they closed Aber UNI this morning , leaving 10k students out to play....

Don’t know why but in my head I keep singing to the tune of Cecilia by Madness:

“Ophelia, you’re breaking my fence,
You’re shaking my shed in the garden”

Loads of trees down around here, the local police facebook is updating every few minutes with another road blockage.
The local police station has a damaged roof and has closed to the public also.

After being stuck in Cuba during Irma.. i can honestly say, this is absolutely nothing.. a bit of strong wind at best.
