I’m skipping this generation. I feel like the iPhone x is a beta test
If people are expecting a different phone next year in terms of design (i.e the black bar gone) or touchID coming back, you're out of your minds
Apple will ride this design for 2 years, all we'll get next year are some improvements in terms of face recognition like we did with touchID the second year, as well as a nice spec bump and camera improvements
The demand for the X has been crazy, rightly so
Touch ID debuted with the 5S and wasn't updated till the 6S, not really the 2nd year. I don't expect Face ID to change next year.If people are expecting a different phone next year in terms of design (i.e the black bar gone) or touchID coming back, you're out of your minds

Yet most reviews recommend buying the GS8 plus, simply because the extra features for the Note 8 don't represent good enough value to warrant the extra cost, plus the 8 plus has better battery life. iOS is no longer a significant enough factor to justify a £1000 price tag when you can get just as good a phone (if not better) from Samsung or even OnePlus for quite a bit less. For the same reason people will still purchase the Note 8? Extra features for more money.

In fact it wouldn't make a tat worth of difference to me what the OS was. If the phone is too much money (and it is) then I would not buy it, as I would never feel comfortable owning something whereby I felt I had been ripped off.
You're comparing the wrong things... iOS justifies the £699 cost... when the Pixel 2 and S8 are in the low £600s. So 10-15% premium for iOS.
The X doesn't have direct competition in the marketplace at the moment.
Screen / size / package / build quality.
The S8 has a big mark against it... it runs Android

Android had face unlock back in 2012. AR... I'll just have to find another way to play Dungeons & Dragons with my friends.Face ID, AR, Performance, Camera

Android is ghastly to use compared to iOS. I know it's cliche to say but it just feels so clunky and unfinished in comparison. Every time I have to use an Android phone, it always feel so unintuitive
This side by side keeps popping up in the video reviews. To me, the X looked washed out / no as vibrant as the 8 plus.
Look at the greens in the phone and message app.

Yes I’m sure in person, the OLED with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 is going to look crap compared to the 1,300:1 LED on the 8!
