The end of a gaming era....

Yep... Well twice now actually.

First time was in 2014 when I moved house, didn't have the room and lost the time due to putting extra time in with work.

Got back into it properly again last year, pretty much straight away with BF1 - whole new desk, screen, rig components, the lot etc. Though I had to bow out again back in March as my little one was born in Feb, moved house again... Priorities vastly changed :) I could have easily kept the whole setup as it wasn't down to needing the money but I could easily see it gathering dust after sometime... Well the desk certainly did after I sold all the components.

I used to miss it before and initially I missed it again for a brief while earlier on in the year but even now I simply don't have the time anymore. I work a lot during the week and spend all my time during the weekend with my daughter - plus I'm back into cars again after a few years out so I also use what ever spare time I have doing a few car bits. Like others on here, I have downsized to a laptop since (XPS 13) which I use occasionally when I have 5 minutes to myself.

I also believe that I'm less into PC's / laptops in general nowadays due shifting the habit to my phone as it does nearly everything I do now (OnePlus 3 - work, emails, web browsing, YouTube etc.)

Liam.

not really a massive gamer any more - haven't really spent significant amounts of time since the days of the Amiga and then early Intel pentium PCs

I did then have a later PC for uni but the only games I had on it were GTA3 and GTA Vice City

basically I only bought a PS2 to play GTA San Andreas though bought Canis Canem Edit/Bully too

I then only bought a PS3 to play GTA4 and use it as a Blue Ray player - though later bought GTA5, Red Dead Redemption and LA Noir

I've not actually finished GTA4 yet and barely started GTA5 (that's an indication of how much time I spend gaming!)... in a year or two I might get a PS4 pro (especially if a new GTA or Red Dead comes out) - I'd also like to try the game 'the last of us'

I did rely purely on a laptop until recently but a few months ago I got a desktop PC set up with a decent graphics card for some deep learning... (though I can just as easily make use of amazon instances too)... I did buy elite but haven't got around to playing it much either

also had a bit of a muck around on my snes mini - didn't have one as a kid and used to love playing Mario kart at the neighbour's house... but I've never played Zelda as that is more of a solo thing - so I've still got that to get through on the snes... at some point, because I'm getting a bit of Nintendo nostalgia (their marketing is working on me!) I might grab a switch and check out the latest mariokart and try the new Zelda game

Essentially I'm I'm the situation already where I don't have much time to sit down for prolonged periods for gaming... however it works out OK for me, I don't find myself in a position where I need the latest kit or latest games as I'm still to experience/get through some of the classics from a few years ago. I'll be able to pick up a second hand or brand new/discounted switch and or PS4 in a year or two without breaking the bank.

I guess what I'm saying is that while I'm not really much of a gaming enthusiast anymore I'll still take an interest and will still buy stuff albeit often some significant period of time after it has come out.

Its a shame I'll never get to play all the games on steam, would be good if you could give them away.

I guess if you've got a relative you could trust with your account then that is perhaps one thing, but yeah I don't think there is any way to transfer games between accounts and selling on an account would be against the rules too, tis a bit of a shame given the investment you've put into them.

I don't have any friends or relative's who game on the PC,they all have a console.

I'll look into it and see if I can give it away to someone.

One reason I will always have a mediocre gaming desktop though is for sim/strategy games, like Total War, Planet Coaster, Cities Skylines and Sims 4. Those type of games need a desktop PC with a nice size (24"+) monitor imo. But luckily, you dont need a super duper PC to play them at decent levels. And I'm also an FSX fan. That really is desktop only, multiple monitor if you really are into it.

There is other stuff that I like a desktop for. One is music production. I tried it on a laptop once, but I couldn't get on with it. I like having nice big screens to smooth my workflow, same with photo editing.

I think its my age why I've gone of the PC,turning 50 soon and need to be more productive with my photography.

I did the same back in 2009. Sold my 2 desktops & went to a 17" laptop & Xbox 360

Roll on to 2014 & I had the itch to move back to a gaming desktop
3 years later the desktop has evolved to the mancave I have now.

Back in 2003 with a temporary house and the birth of my first child circumstances meant I couldn't play games anymore. Things have got easier since but a long period away means I just don't have the attention span now. I can't get into games at all.

I used to be passionate about games. When I think about going to an arcade in the 1980's I get a tingly feeling of excitement. I adored my VIC20, C64 and Amiga days. Thinking of them brings feelings of real joy. I lost my life to Doom and various Quakes back in the early PC days and I adored that time. Like many of us here I was early to online gaming and some of my fondest moments were long nights playing online with a few cans of beer and chatting online.

I really miss that feeling of happiness so, so much. But I just can't settle down to play now. I get bored in minutes. I LOVE gaming but now it's more a matter of loving the memories. I really wish I could enjoy games again and I miss it so much.

But my old gaming PC is almost exclusively used by my son now. A laptop works fine for what I need to do. But I wish I could get the interest back again.

can you really call yourself a gamer if you never own a console?

surely there are some 'classics' that are only available on certain platforms?

On that basis, every gamer would need to own almost every console and a PC and most of the home computers of the 80s (I say most because IIRC very few games were made only for one of them, e.g. if a game was on a Spectrum it was also on a Commodore 64) and also be able to run iOS and Android games on something. I think that's too restrictive a definition.

Since Fallout 4 came out, the only games I've played to any extent are FO4, International Snooker 2012 and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (a free Roguelike game). But I've played FO4 for over 800 hours. Gaming is my main form of entertainment. I don't watch TV, so I have a lot more time for gaming and reading. I think it would be odd to say that I'm not a gamer because I don't own every gaming platform that has a game on it that someone calls a classic.

I've no great objection to console gaming. Sure, a gaming PC is much better but a modern console is adequate. The deal-breaker for me is the lack of mouse and keyboard. I have an Xbox controller for my PC. I gave it a good try. It's now disconnected and gathering dust in a cupboard. Less precise, less comfortable to use, just plain less everything. It was better only for racing games because it made analogue steering possible, but it was much worse than a wheel for racing games. So I have no use for it at all. I left it connected until FO4, which Bethesda made to force the use of a controller if one was connected. So I disconnected it.

Thats really smart. Nicely done. I'd be tempted to put an led strip behind the monitor for ambience at night.

not really, I just meant there were a few 'classics' - the existence of those doesn't necessitate owning almost every console... obviously this is all rather subjective stuff as no doubt others may well argue for a much wider range of titles etc..
