How long will this journey take?

Is google correct in it's assumption? I don't drive on the M25 during morning rush hour traffic and need to be at my destination at 10am on Monday so planning ahead.

If I left with 3/4 hours would I make it fine. I know it's how long is a piece of string considering maybe crashes etc, but whats the M25 like in the morning?

Google maps is scarily accurate when you put in a required time of arrival, e.g. I need to be in Auckland CBD by 9.00am this coming Saturday, how long will it take? What it can't account for is when things go massively wrong and from experience, the M25 can be an absolute pig on a good day. I'd leave a lot of extra time or go up the evening before, stay in a hotel, and get a cab/tube to the Delta Group in the morning.

Basic rule of thumb for me with anything involving the M25 was double the quoted time.

Better to be early and hang around in the car park/reception that be sweating bullets with stress because traffic has messed up your calculations.

Actually looking at that (and this information may have changed since I was in the UK), but based upon your start position and to avoid the Heathrow/M4 cluster**** it might be worth going clockwise around the M25 instead. More miles but less traffic.

I suppose it depends on what the Dartford crossing is like these days. When I used commute it was a lot easier and less hectic than Heathrow etc.*

* I might need to put a disclaimer on this!

Leave early arrive early. Leave on time arrive late. Thats the general rule for the M25.

Good thing is you can go either way around with the sort of distance you're going, so that opens two opportunities for you.

Look to leave with a spare hour and crack out Waze when you get going.

We sometimes use google as a backup to our logistics software.

And on an 8hr night with 15-20 collections over 300 miles It gets to within 15mins of a finish time. (unless they stop for mcd's)

To think our other system cost over £20k

Used to do that part of the M25 very regularly, it's not as bad as the south, but the west part is a pain in the mornings. I'd give your self 3 hours to get that journey done. If you can, more.

M25 can be horrendous. I've spent hours stuck on it in that exact part. If it were me I would head for a cafe really early and wait there until my appointment. That way if the M25 was bad you have a lot of contingency and can skip the cafe if it's a worst case.

Ok thanks. I was going to leave at half 6 and give myself 3.5hrs to do it. Clarification was needed to see if even this was unrealistic.

The A3 will likely queue coming towards the M25 junction from Guilford with a few clear stretches.

Anything between Reigate and Chertsey on the M25 can be iffy. Once you reach Heathro you will likely queue going past the M4 slip until the M40 then it will probably clear a little more.

If I hit the Cherstey junction at 7:15 I can be at the M4 by 7:30, if I hit Chertsey at 7:45 it can often take 30-40 minutes.

As others have said, leave at 6ish.

Good luck :)

Every time I've driven Southampton to Luton Airport via the M25 it has taken anywhere from 1h20 to 2h longer than Google estimated, all delays being incurred on or connected to the M25.

Not safer to get the train? You can get trains from Waterloo > Portsmouth that take 1hr40. Citymapper tells me you can get to Waterloo in 45mins from E17 so...

I'm guessing there's a reason you are driving though.

Personally if it were me, I'd just drive the night before and stay in a hotel.

Monday morning traffic = hell
M25 rush hour = hell

All it takes is 1 accident and you'll be stuck for hours.

Good has a function to say arrive at x time on x day, and will do a very good job of getting you there on time in my experience. As someone else has said, it's scarily accurate.

However, the M25 is unpredictable.

In what way is he not already going clockwise?
