***Official - Super Mario Odyssey Thread!*** NO SPOILERS

I don’t know why you wouldn’t use the homing shot tbh - I use it every single time I throw the hat, ever since the game said ‘oh btw just wiggle the joycon and it’ll Home in’. It’s not at all awkward with separate joycons so there’s no reason NOT to use it. Makes dispatching groups of enemies much quicker as it then boomerangs between them (IIRC).

I’ve just been told I’m at the showdown although I suspect there is still some way left to go before the ‘end game’ begins.

Absolutely, if you are playing with the split joy con method it's pretty much automatic as I've been doing it from the start.

No right or wrong way of course, people seem to be enjoying it across all control options

Yup, been playing it mostly in undocked mode (in bed) and have been having a blast.

I have still managed my fair share of stupid deaths (mainly missing jumps) but I carry on regardless.

I just very rarely need it. I see it as more of a safety net to use if you're struggling to aim normally.

You say why not use it, but why would I do an extra flick every time when I only need it once every 30 or 40 throws?

You can also curve your shots by tilting the joycon before the throw, which doesn't work if you do the homing attack every time.

Neither way is wrong, I just really like the trick shots rather than having it do the work for me which I don't find as fun.

I rarely use homing shot because I find it never works as I intend. Its helped for a few coins down sides of ledges but otherwise I find it annoying.

Guess I'm just crap with it.

So I got to the end credits today - an enjoyable journey and a fun game for sure :)

I think by the time the credits rolled I had just under 300 moons. I then went and got another 50 or so. I may go back for a mooch but I think I’m pretty much done with it.

Some observations!

I really enjoyed the moon level at the end - it was so fun to send Mario flying all over the place. The final sequences were funny and it was amusing to see Mario get rejected.

My god did that massive bullet bill bursting through the wall make me jump :D

I was pretty tired of the Broodle battles so I was genuinely annoyed to find that the dark side of the moon was a Broodles boss tower - eugh how incredibly boring... attempted once and won’t bother with that.

Most of the levels are slightly too big for me to warrant revisiting. I will probably try and 100% the first level but I’m not wondering around the desert for hours trying to find the final few purple coins that I missed first go.

I was a little tired of the ‘find two stars per room’ mini levels by the end of it, particularly when the hidden star was just round an odd corner or similar... and the main puzzle was mindless.

On the balance I think Zelda is the better game, by quite a margin. There’s an enourmous amount of game in both but I think Zelda does a better job of making you want to explore all of it.

Well since my previous post I’ve gone back to try and 100% the first couple of worlds - so maybe I’m not done! Got that all on the cap level and one left on the fossil level.

One thing that’s not a puzzle solving spoiler at all but seems a bit odd to me:

You can seemingly buy unlimited power moons from the shops? I was confused by this at first - I ended up buying 12 moons from the first world shop ‘by accident’ because I saw the option to buy 10 and was curious. I suppose it’s a feature that means you don’t have to laboriously collect them to see everything - feels like cheating mind!

Also - in terms of Mario’s abilities:

I finally cottoned on that you can use that otherwise useless dive action to make long successive jumps with throwing the hat. Haven’t mastered it and haven’t managed to chain together more than 2/3 from memory.

I also spotted the golden kooper trooper doing a hat bounce trick shot to jump up a very high platform. Haven’t mastered that either - although by joining the long jump function I beat him anyway.

So yeah - clearly I’m a little hooked!

Got to 500 moons and unlocked the last level. Too hard for me. Watched some speed runs of it. Damn people got some skills in this game.

Low and behold, I did try to 100% the desert!

Managed to get all but 3 of the purple coins - I assume they are just half-hiding somewhere I didn’t whizz the camera over. Might take an hour to search for them so I consider myself beat.

I got all by 2 of the moons without cheating - had to have someone give me a helpful steer so I could puzzle together the rest. For reference they were (without revealing the answers - just what they were called):

Secret of the mural - could see this on the map but didn’t understand the clue so really threw me.

The east tower - damn, so ‘obvious’ if you know. But - spoiler for solution...

I don’t feel like the game ever really explained the bullet bill mechanics properly for you to solve that one - there was nothing to indicate they took longer to explode if you caught them late considering that if you caught them whilst flashing, which everyone has surely done, it doesn’t reset the timer. Huh.

Also:
I’m not counting the moons I recognise that I have to go through other worlds to get - on the basis that I’ll get these later.

Not a bad effort I think!

My last 3 on that level:
My last 3 were hanging of the edge of the South West cliff. It took ages for me to find them. Also the hidden ones at the top of one of the upside down sections that needed you to hit invisible blocks were sneaky.

For anyone who has finished this with a view to 100% completion, hows does it compare between Galaxy 1, 2, and 3D World?

Is everyone else getting 100% possible completion on each world before moving onto the next? Some of those world coins are a *****!

My approach was to have a decent poke around until I naturally wanted to move onto the next place - wasn’t that fussed on collecting everything first go as it’s always there to go back to later if you’re so inclined. I’m also wary of n64 day esque ‘you can’t collect everything until later’. I’m now going back through them in order to collect what I can.

Yeah I think I got both sets of those desert coins - no idea where my missing three are. There is a point where it’s just laborious trying to find everything / solve everything without hints, but I’m happy with a good stab at it!

Also - I can definitely say the game increases in difficulty somewhat post-credits. There is one fricking room that I must have died at least 40 times in!

That bullet Bill room on dark side... my god, those jumps!
