***Official - Super Mario Odyssey Thread!*** NO SPOILERS

well you're doing a lot better at collecting moons than I am

I have about that many and finished the game. Now time to start collecting I think.

I am a bit of a hoarder and a completionist. Typically I am getting all the moons bar about 10 or so before moving on to the next level. There are some bits I am finding that I will have to come back when I get some certain abilities. The metal looking cube in each level. Thats driving me nuts :p

Yeah, I can't understand the metal boxes, the cages or the areas stuck up in the sky

You will understand everything eventually :)

525 moons so far. I am tempted to try to get all of them but not sure yet. I'm only playing this at weekends when I have more time.

I ground pounded one of the metal boxes far too many times for spectators to not think I was a bit dim :p

Areas stuck up in the sky I've figured. Well, a few of them. I know how to get to them at least.

I will not move on from a world until I have every moon possible (you can tell because toad says he has no more hints) and all the coins.

I got all the coins in the wooded area (the world I am currently in) - but I feel like going back to previous worlds to investigate more before going to the next one. In the desert I have all but 3 coins in total. This game has the ability to drive you to completion through frustration and stubborness :D

I've got one last moon to get but can't figure it out, it's a 'Hint Art' one. I'm almost certain I've got the general location correct but just can't quite solve the exact location, missing something obvious likely... or maybe I have got the location wrong.

I didn't mind the motion controls, not sure they added much though and I think locking out some abilities (and hence some moons) beyond motion controls is pretty poor form.

There are no Moons locked behind motion controls.

You need to nail down this combo:

Run > crouch jump > throw hat > ground pound > jump cancel > hat bounce > hat throw

You can extend this further with a second dive (ground pound > jump cancel) after the second hat throw for even more distance.

The precision and intricacy to Mario's movement is fantastic, they really took it to the next level with Odyssey.

Only if you aren't trying to grab a ledge or wall slide, or it doesn't work.

Yup, you have to be confident you can reach ground obviously. There are many big shortcuts that can only be made with the full combo, ones that often seem impossible at a glance. It's very satisfying making that last dive to safety :D.

Stupid question but what's jump cancel?

It's just the dive you can do from mid-air (Z→Attack).

i.e. you are cancelling the ground pound animation to make a jump.

EDIT:
This short video explains it all well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAIO8boL_7A
(note: the 'hop on hat return' is not necessary but does give you that little bit more distance.)

I was at Metro Kingdom by the time I discovered the dive→hat jump stuff, after some practice I found the extra options it all allows made things even more fun for me though. Koopa Freerunning became far more addictive also :o.

So I am in Metro Kingdom annnd....

I got the plant back online and exprience the jump up superstar (or whatever its called) song along with the 2D Donkey Kong tribute and man...I loved every single second of it. I was smiling from ear to ear during all of it, such a nice touch!

:D

Was so awesome!

There are definitely moons locked behind motion controls unless you have mastered the full moveset. There is a moon high above one of the hat houses in the first world that you can only get as a frog using the extra height you get from the "shake" jump unless you pull off some pretty advanced hat jumps.

You sure about that. I’ve come across some that needed the shake to jump higher as far as I can tell.

Yep, I'm sure.

A few moons are designed to be obtained with motion controls, but there's always an alternative less obvious method.

I know the moon you are referring to. There's no need for motion controls or hat jumps to get it.

When it comes to the moveset, there's really not a lot of mastery needed at all. Cappy tutorials teach you everything you need to get all the moons without using motion.
Mastery of movement is another story but that's way beyond anything that's required to get all moons.
