Well I've saved over 200 odd euros compared to my hotel out in almere - so travel expenses saved too - means more money for coffee

Was in texas when booking. Come or the hotel made an error. Was literally not a single room I could stay in.
So it's not always cut and dry. Was pretty scary.

Payment taken. 2 weeks before I was supposed to go I got an email from Booking saying that the hotel had ceased operation, and to contact my bank to get my money back, which I had to do. Booking could do nothing.

You're absolutely right. I completely glossed over the fact that the third party sites are acting as agents on behalf of the supplier. Interestingly enough the CMA are apparently launching an investigation into their practices. I'm interested to see what they dredge up.
