At the moment you'll only get a 1920x1080p image in 16:9. There is an OS update coming to support 1440p output but it will still be only 16:9.
My project Scorpio edition does the same thing with the fans very loud up and down then goes more or less silent again very annoying.
Defiantly something wrong with it, not wanna send it back yet though lol enjoying it to much.

Scorpio edition runs quiet for me, picked up a 55lg b7 oled for it a beautiful sight AC:Origins looks awesome and so does forza, Atmos sounds good in gears, waiting for the lucid headset next year.
Only thing I noticed with this and I’m not sure what it’s down to is some sort of signal drop of the picture, during battlefront 2 during my 10 trial and also in cod, but it hasn’t done it since.

Well I got it swapped today and guess what? It's exactly the same! Lovely and quiet on the dashboard with no problems playing non enhanced titles but anything that's had an update makes the fan speed alter frequently. I'm now on my third console the first one kept giving me errors the second had this fan issue and now this one. I'm not sure what to do now as it works ok with no crashes or error message it's just this annoying fan problem!
Which games does it do it on, all enhanced games? Mine only seems to get loud when playing Wolfenstein 2.
I thought it was because I had blocked one of the sides, but it still does it after a couple of hours playing. I guess that game stresses the console the most from all the enhanced games I have.

Wolfenstein does it and so does Battlefront 2 and to a lesser extent COD WW2, I can also notice it on the insects demo.

Love the new Xbox X, got me back into playing games again for now, my only gripe is it puts out so much heat, it can literally make my living room a sauna after playing forza / gta 5 for a few hours and its not exactly a box room

My X is much quieter than my S ever was. Most of the time it's silent, occasionally it becomes audible, but most of the time you can't hear it.
Never heard my X spin up. If I put my head very close I can hear the fan fluctuating up and down slightly, but that's about it.
Also, Warhammer: End Times Verminitide in GWG this December, which has just recently had an X Enhanced patch to allow 4K native

Never heard my console once.
Played almost exclusively 4k games since getting it and it runs like a dream.
Brilliant piece of hardware.
