War crimes defendant takes poison during live trial

As someone with a mother who's a prison guard, let me ask you 1 very important question.

Would you want to be outnumbered 40:1 with a bunch of very bored, angry, criminals?

Bang on. I worked in Brixton Prison for 4 months and make no mistake, these guys can get extremely creative when bored.

Anyone care to explain why these trials invariably take 5 years?
The costs must be horrendous given the amount of lawyers undoubtedly involved.
As for him taking poison, lets hope this sort of thing catches on.

They don't have to treat them like animals, but there should be no entertainment or luxuries there at all.

Boredom should be part of the punishment. Paint everything grey, no TV, no music, give them the same food every day, etc.

That's how criminals become worse criminals. Look at Charles Bronson - he's never been a good guy, but the crimes he's committed definitely do not warrant a life sentence.

But, he's been thoroughly institutionalised and doesn't know how to live outside. The drugs they've given him and the years of solitary confinement have ruined any chance he would have ever had of living properly in the real world.

This doesn't necessarily apply to these war criminals, but that's my perspective anyway.

Was reading somewhere they are only remanded at The Hague Hotel prior to and during the trial. Once convicted the sentence is served elsewhere (not specified) so maybe not quite as cushy.

Someone seems a little salty about those big strong Serbians who'd wipe you off the face of the planet if you spoke to them like that in person, their genetics are about as least poverty as it gets.

I'll just leave this here to prove my point:

Was he actually guilty? Does anyone care?

My limited understanding is that he didn't actually do anything. And that was the problem, when troops under his command committed atrocities he never really made a determined effort to stop them. However he didn't order the atrocities or participate.

Pretty much what I understood too when I started to look into it. Seems a little unfair to what has happened to him.

This. There is little love lost between Croats and Serbians.

Yep, I only found out a few weeks ago that my friend, who is Serbian doesn't like Rita Ora. I asked her why then she told me because where she is from. There was me thinking Rita Ora was British.

well given this bloke has been there since 2004 that period of remand prior to the trial can be rather a long time

yes they do have less cushy arrangements after conviction and appeals have been exhausted - a previous Serbian warlord was sent to the UK after conviction and ended up getting his throat slashed by some muslim inmates

Check these scum that even the Nazis found a little OTT. They even had a knife they called the "Serb cutter".

The reasoning behind the accommodation not being a rat-infested oubliette is because they have not been convicted yet, generally. They were held there before sentencing not after. Though frankly I see a small, bland room with a cramped desk and a narrow bed so I don't get all the comments about luxury. I think you could hang prisoners by their wrists and the same people would complain about the inmates getting a cushy life inside.
