Boy, 15, admits causing crash in which five people died

To be honest I don't get the sense of banning people from driving when they clearly weren't bothered by the legalities in the first place.
It’s easier to jail them when they’re caught again because you’re only dealing with breach of a court order rather than a criminal offence, per se.

Aye, and the sentencing tends to be far harsher than for a driving offence.

Personally I feel sorry for the families of those who died, and those that died, but at the same time I'm glad that the only ones to die were the ones who were breaking the law as opposed to someone who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Unfortunately these sort of dross don't do regret, and the courts are loathe to do consequence, so they remain feral ad infinitum unless culled by accident or vendetta.
I know it's easy to assume he wouldn't care because he's nicking cars (or driving a nicked car), but I suspect his sentence will be nothing on his internal suffering as a result of this act of extremely reckless and foolish behaviour. He's 15, has no experience of the real world, probably got stuff like GTA in mind and with the support of two 24yr olds has killed 5 people; including a 12 year old and his younger brother.

Don't get me wrong, he should have known better, even at his age. But I don't think he's really deserved what he's got.

It's a failure of decent role models really

However crappy it is, do people deserve to die for stealing a car? Still it's a case of play stupid games win stupid prizes for me. What the hell was that 24 yo with a family doing in there though?

No people don't deserve to die for stealing a car. However when it comes to choosing to act in a dangerous manner that endangers the lives of others - well that to me is a different kettle of fish.

And just because he's 24 doesn't mean he's not scum. Being scum is independent of age.

Did the younger ones know right from wrong?! Did even the older ones?! They probably have a completely warped sense of it, but ultimately is that an excuse at all?

We can give the benefit of the doubt that these people might have grown up to be decent members of society but get real. Raised by scum, living with scum, friends with scum, it'd take a miracle for them not to follow the same path.

They were little scrotes, undoubtedly, young idiots who should have known better.

Would they have grown up to eventually lead a worthy existence? - you’d hope so, I for one was an idiot at 15, arguably at 24 also I’m most certainly not the same person now I’m 47....

Sympathy for the families - certainly, sympathetic toward the victims? To a slight degree, of course, they were kids.

Did they deserve to die? Absolutely not.

There are plenty in this world who deserve death far worse than this lot who’ve paid the ultimate price for their stupidity.

Not much sympathy, even at 15 you should have a pretty good understanding of right and wrong and basic common sense. My GD hat sadly has to concur Darwinism won out here.

And this could easily have gone the other way. Although the drivers in the (1991) Akers Way tragedy in Swindon were not under age, they were driving recklessly (80 MPH in a 40 MPH zone) and killed 5 poor souls sitting on a roadside bench.

Hopefully the driver will get the book thrown at him and do serious jail time but sadly this is Britain, more likely to be 18 months soft touch then back on the street to cause more mayhem.

It's not that they deserved to die, death was a high probability outcome of the action they took, it's an inbuilt risk of joyriding.

I'm always amazed how, in an impact like this one person can survive unscathed and 5 die with terrible injuries.

Was he unscathed?
The reports from when he was in court being charged say his arm was in a sling and he had bruises on his face.

At the time they said they couldn't be sure who was in the car at the time of the crash, so presumably some bodies were outside the car at the time. It could be that only some were wearing seatbelts, hence some flew out and some stayed in. If the driver was wearing his seatbelt that will have helped.

In any case, he's more unscathed than he is dead.

I expect he will be out by the time he is 18. You only do serious time in the UK if you do something really, really, bad like interrupting the treasuries revenue stream
