Things you've noticed as you're getting older?

OP invest in a decent mattress. We did, it's the best thing you'll ever do for your back. That and correct your posture :)

After having a herniated disc age 27, and going through the recovery etc, I think that the best thing you can do is regularly (ie daily) stretches for your back and legs. I found out that my hamstrings were extremely tight, and that apparently pulls on the muscles in your lower back. Once I'd managed to loosen those, my back pain reduced dramatically. It was actually weight lifting that really removed the pain for me, but I think that was likely to be due to just being a lot more mobile.

39 here.

- years go by quicker
- the summers are getting hotter each year
- everyone have autism / get triggered / offended
- the high street is entirely comprised of gambling shops, charity shops, phone shops and coffee shops
- chart music and TV went to pot years ago
- everything is getting smaller e.g. Toblerone, Wagon Wheels, Cadbury's Créme eggs, Walkers crisps
- you HAVE to be on Facebook / Twitter or gtfo
- you're not allowed to say gay or straight any more, you have to say cis- or whatever

Lol I like these ones.

As for the guys weeing all night. That ain't normal get some tests. Or try not drinking 1h b4 bedtime.

Why are people saying they don't need to sleep as much? I'm sleeping 5 or 6h a night and it kills me.. I could easily do 7 8h and be just about ok.

  • Noticed how much I appreciate a quiet Sunday morning lately - I have 2 kids so nope, quiet doesn't exist.
  • Started having to trim my nose hair - I enjoy it.
  • Have no idea who any celebrities from the last 5 or so years are - nope, I'm very on trend even for an old person ...
  • Most of my cultural references are from the 90s and early 2000s - ... although this is also true.
  • Back hurts pretty much every day now - no.
  • Started listening to Queen unironically - no.
  • Can get by with much less sleep - yes, see kids reference above.
  • The internet is getting more and more boring - the internet makes you stupid.
  • Hardly ever feel like watching TV anymore - yes but sport is the exception.
  • Zero interest in video games - no, still love my video games.
  • Increased interest in gardening - no, we have a man who does all that stuff for us.
  • Get a bit excited about my yearly blood lipids test results - I fear blood tests, no joke.
  • Sometimes I think about buying a boat - yes but a good one costs serious cash.
  • Increased interest in radio 4 - always loved R4
  • Got my first divorce under my belt - nope, hopefully won't happen either.
  • Started to prefer red wine instead of beer. And one glass is enough - no and no.
  • Less interest in weight training and more interest in cycling and endurance - no.
  • Don't feel the need to try and impress anyone, happy to be plain and invisible - mostly no but also competitive dad does kick in now and again.

  • Seem to be more tolerant of others. "That's nice dear." - no, I'm fairly intolerant unless I know someone IRL.
  • Catch myself imagining what kind of grand dad I'll be (could happen in about 10 years) - No, although I probably should start :/
Not even 40 yet...

Good thread kwerk :)

Noticed how racism, nationalism etc is ever present as iv got older....and is getting worse, noticed how intolerant people are, seems as time goes on people can't just live and let live, just get on with their own lives.

Noticed how cruel the passing of time can be watching grand parents grow old and pass on.....watching my parents get older is hard but also makes me want to do more for them (I'm 35)

Noticed how material items other than what I need for work are now no longer important....in fact I'm drawn to a simple minimalist life now...the only thing I keep up to date is pc/phone because of work needs....I'm not bothered about TVs (have one but never used, no TV licence no sky etc, no point.) no fancy car, don't care about fancy watches, non of it makes you happy really.

Anyways interesting thread.

I'd be worried if I was doing/experiencing a quarter of what was on that list. Listening to Queen and Radio 4 and you're not even 40?!

For me it's simply vision and hearing gradually going, but then I've sat in front of a monitor for much of my life and never needed glasses, so I guess my eyes have actually held out quite well.

As I get older I have some observations too. 42 year old here

- Younger kids are addicted to their phones to the expense of not being able to socialise face to face without holding a phone in their hand
- I have no idea of any of the voice enhanced singers making up the charts these days, nor do I care as all the music these days all sounds similar
- I am in better shape now than I was in my 20's and 30's
- It took Battlefield 1 before I got my interest in gaming back again after a few years of steady on the slide interest
- Doctors and surgeons are all younger than me now and I, rather stupidly, worry they are old enough to be doing that sort of a job lol
- Younger lads going to the gym trying to impress the girls by swinging far too heavy weights, amuse me now, especially when I use their 1 rep max weights to warm up with. Trying to show some of them how to train to get gains faster is like talking into a brick wall.
- Political correctness is ruining the world
- Gender fluid rubbish will mess up childrens minds in the future. I have zero doubt that this will be a massive problem down the line when kids keep changing genders to whatever they think is cool at the time.
- I am less tolerant of idiots
- My own family make me happier more than new technology does now.
- Modern TV is quite crap these days. Nothing on the TV now that makes me laugh like Only fools and horses did. That sort of tv show wouldn't be allowed now due to aforementioned PC brigade correctness
- Lots of people on tv when I was growing up, are dying now of old age and it scares me.
- I'm 42 but I have the mentality of a 30 year old, basically I don't feel my age.
- Manners and decency have been all but eradicated in favour of me me me narcissism thanks to social media
- The realisation that I'm glad I grew up in the early 90s than today as todays kids are suffocated by social media and can't live without it.

Creatine was what did it for me. When I was using that it was a 2 times a night jobby.

I found a loading week of 20g a day, for one week only, was plenty to see me through a 3 week regime. Rather than taking it every day.

Nose hair - grrrr! Had to pull one out a while back that kept tickling and it was almost an inch long

I could probably name all the political figures from Spitting Image but struggle to identify government ministers from the last couple of general elections :(

I think this is my problem. My best mates at the moment are 25 and 30ish... I often forget I'm as old as I am (42) :(

Oh, memory is my other issue. I know everyone says they have a bad memory, but I really struggle with it. If I could have chips implanted, I would.

Noticed:
Time passes quickly, always wondering what I can do to slow things down.
More concerned about healthy living and more determined than ever to look after myself.
People **** me off more than ever, a life time of idiots and a tough job doesn't help I guess.
Ever more concerned about my kids and what the future holds for them.
Find it harder to be content with the things that used to make me super happy.
TV gets worse, music gets worse.
Takes a lot more to make me laugh nowadays.
Notice more greys everday!
Have noticed lots of things on others my age and smile when it's just them and not me :p

I'm sure if I sit and think about it a lot more will come to mind...

TV gets worse, music gets worse.

Personally I would say this makes you sound old. I don't have much interest in music, so will only comment on TV, but I think production and general quality of TV has reached heights it was no way near 20 years back. Yes, there's some terrible TV these days, but the good stuff is a lot better than the good stuff we had before. I do take the point on comedies mentioned a few posts up. Is it just hard to keep coming up with new stuff to make you laugh though?

Obvious one, but diet, exercise and proper recovery with mobility and stretching are paramount to feeling strong not just physically but mentally, I've even started hot yoga classes to the amusement of all my friends and it's likely one of the most challenging things I've done in terms of exercise, many of the women make it look so easy!

- you're not allowed to say gay or straight any more, you have to say cis- or whatever

The company I work for has a large LGBT customer base, and there is certainly no issue with using the word gay. None of my gay friends mind either.

Anecdotal I know, but at least it balances your anecdote :p

I used to notice all of the above. Now, three years into my mother's dementia diagnosis, I only worry about who's going to keep me safe when/if my turn comes.

On the bright side, now I'm living off my savings and carer's allowance I'm finally making some progress playing the guitar. So I mainly notice how hard it is to learn anything new! Which just makes me worry about my brain even more. :)

TV to me is just cooking, soaps, reality TV and drama (i.e guff), none of that interests me. It used to be loads of motorsport and stuff, that interested me. It's not about production quality for me it's content, and the current stuff does nothing for me personally.
