Coral of the story? Don't eBay drunk!

What was so special about the boot hinges?

Look at them. This is a few notches above the average pressed steel stuff in most cars:

Anyway, this is more A8 than Passat.

Ah yes, I ballsed up the title - if a mod sees this can they correct to ‘moral of the story’ please... :D

I had to get the V6 diesel as it’s the only engine I’m confident in being able to DIY, and seems the most problem free.
It’ll be going in for a remap (and DPF delete) shortly.

I paid a shade over £8k from a dealer, not bad at all (if a little above average, but finding a well specced V6 TDI without moon miles is difficult).

So far so good, anyway - I just hope it behaves! VAG-COM kit on the way so I can go digging for issues should the need arise.

What’s the point of getting a dpf delete if they are gonna start doing physical checks soon come mot time?
Also cool car I realise they are very expensive when new but 8k seems a lot of money for a soon to be 9 year old diesel?

Why didn't you buy another mg?

With regards to dpf deletes most people gut the regular box out so to an MOT tester it looks normal. There is a way to check this physically on some cars to see if it's gutted. Whether they bring that into practise I don't know.

No please do do it, then hopefully the government will come in sooner and tax all Diesel owners like the filthy polluters that they are destroying any value in purchasing a Diesel and banishing the fuel to the trash heap of history.

Couldn't agree more, rubbish fuel.

I love those Phaetons especially the big engine ones but road tax put me off - My drool one is LWB 4 seater with cream leather and I think W16 - really lusted over one a few years ago - come to my senses now and got a Focus. - Did anyone see that druggy one painted brown over cream with dish wheels on Autotrader a year or so ago - quick respray and new wheels it would have been a cheap limo.

The hint is in the new price. There is more to a cars value than whether its 'diesel' or not.
Obviously. But Surely the 240ish bhp 3.0 diesel is worth less than the 330bhp 4.2 v8 or the 6.0 w12 440bhp though? Normally bigger engines with more power cost more new and used hence the reason something like a bmw 330/340i wound cost more than a 320d new and used whatever age. What I am saying is you see the bigger more powerful engined Phaetons for the same price or less than what op paid which is why I said 8k sounds a lot for a 9yr old example with the lowest spec 3.0d engine choice. In fact just looking on AT now there is a 2008 4.2 v8 with 79k on for 7k

The W12 is worth more - a lot more - about £4k more for a 2009 model. The V8 is worth less simply because it's just not wanted on the used market. It's not special and uber top of the range like a W12 and it's not useful like a TDI. Who wants a luxury cruiser designed to cover hundreds of miles but at just 25mpg in a country where fuel is £1.20 a litre?* The diesel is far more useful in our high fuel price environment therefore it's worth more. It's simply a better fit.

*Some people do - for some people money just is no real object. These people don't buy 9 year old second hand VW's.

there's presumably an element of running costs here, as these cars age the high maintenance powerhouses become less desirable because owners buying them for 8k don't necessarily want the £100+k maintenance tag. the op said himself the reason he wanted the diesel was because of lower running costs.

There's nothing wrong with the Phaeton. For something to cruise around in and be perfectly relaxed at the end of the day, hell yeah.

Eeeek ! £520 annual vehicle tax.

For a flagship model VW didn't push the design boat out, it's basically a elongated eurobox Passat.

Hopefully the steering is light, parking that barge in a multi-storey designed for
Fiat 500s will be arm numbing.

I think that's the only Petrol Phaeton on AT later than an 05 plate in the whole country though. Being a 57 plate I believe it predates the touch screen nav you would find in an 09 plate so looks quite dated/clunky now: https://i.atcdn.co.uk/imgser-uk/ser...303&width=720&height=540&paddingColour=e8e8e3

Passat on the outside, but in terms of features and interior it’s not even slightly similar :)
