1080ti prices. Has everyone got a screw loose?

first off, before I rant on about the 10% hike in the price on a 1080ti, it may of come to the attention already of the simple lack of these cards for sale. Last week you could pick up a 1080ti for a little under £700. Least it seems you could.

I went and bought one, or rather, pre order one, only to find out today that the expected arrival time for it was the END OF MARCH! I fished about for another one, only to see prices had hit the roof. It feels like the equivalent of OPEC are running the nvidia market. Only difference being OPEC do at least allow the odd few million barrels of oil into the market - nvidia has given up making 1080ti's!

What's bloody happening? Everyone's gone mad.

If it's like last time with the flood of 2nd hand 7970s at 1/3 - 2/5 price, you might be able to pick up 1080tis for £200-250 by the end of the year. The fans will need replacing.

On the plus side Samsung is manufacturing GDDR6 memory so that presumably means we won't have long to wait until the next gen GPU's come out. Now seems like a pretty terrible time to buy given prices are crazy with the mining boom and the current gen Nvidia cards are getting pretty long in the tooth having been on sale for around 18 months.

Not saying your wrong, but how exactly do you know that?

Taking that as true, they need to expand then, pure and simple. When Samsung and their friends flood the market with ddr6, are we all going to be waiting on for gpu units to then pay through the roof prices like we are now? It doesn't paint a good picture for newcomers to the pc gaming market.

To be frank, it's gone daft. I've just built my third rig. My first was nvidia and was a flying machine for about a grand. My second was AMD and cost me £700 and change. This recent build has left me no change out of 2K! Last count was £2478

That's beyond the reach of a lot of folk, and with console prices at £400 it makes you wonder why we bother. Sure it's gonna leave a console for dead but 2K! It's just to much. (Oh and that's a z370 and a 8700k. No i9 here):rolleyes:
 
there is something i dont get, it's perfectly possible for AMD and Nvidia to make cards bad for mining, why don't they do it ? they reduce the hash rate significantly for desktop gpus, and then release a specific mining gpu, with much higher hash rate, strip them from display connectors, bump up the price, and there you go, problème solved.
they can have better profit, they can evaluate better warranty, so they don't get screwed, they do not lose market share, and they could even open pre-orders to easily manage production.
this should have been the way AMD went after 2014.

They can't, Nvidia and and don't make the chips, the Fans make the chips. The fans have a finite production capability. Expanding there equipment can take 5+ years and 10s of billions. What happens when the mining craze crashes and there is no new demand?
The fabs would go bankrupt and the remaining suppliers would charge through the mode for a fraction of capacity at inferior processes. intel would laugh all the way to the bank.


If you want GPU prices to come the most effective way would be a large tax on mining as a form of environmental protection.
