Monster Hunter World (PS4, XB1, PC)

Fair enough - I've played neither! Have heard a few people mention the controls though so just trying to get an idea of what I'm in for :D

I'm a big fan of Horizon and Zelda and it doesn't make much sense comparing the controls as they're very different games to Monster Hunter. Everything is slower and a little more clunky by design. You miss a big swing and you're stuck in the animation while a monster tears you up - it's to discourage you not to miss ;)

Anyone had an early dispatch yet? Ordered from SimplyGames mainly due to them delivering a day or two early on most releases I purchased from them last year, still processing for me though.

Mine has just been shipped, so hopefully here for tomorrow. I would check your account.

That's just bad design then, which doesn't surprise me with it being Capcom.

I wasn't expecting the fluidity of Zelda control wise but this felt like wading through treacle.

I'm not concerned by a good game using an older engine, Zelda doesn't have the highest quality textures but a lot comes down to the art style used.

I found the UI to have too much going on, Horizon also has this problem but you can turn the bulk of it off (not sure if MHW has this option in the full game?).

The clipping was really poor though, I've got a ridiculously large sword/axe thingy on my back and my cloak is just passing through it constantly, I know not a deal breaker gameplay-wise but you look at the back of the character a lot and it just seemed poor. Might not be present in the full game, but an easy fix would have been to get rid of cloaks/floaty tops if you can't make them look decent.

Clunky was probably the wrong word to use. Slow and deliberate perhaps is better. I genuinely like the controls in Monster Hunter games. They remind me of the Souls titles in that you have to think ahead more before you move/dodge attack than you do in games like Zelda and Horizon. You can royally balls it up and leave yourself exposed, or time it just right and feel like a badass. More risk, more reward. The clipping is a pain, but forgivable given the quantity of different weapon and armour combos. And given how ridiculously large the weapons can get! Each to their own though. What you don't like about the controls is probably what I do like about them.

Reviews are coming. Essential purchase according to Eurogamer.

'The truth of Monster Hunter - and arguably its greatest strength - is that you're never truly its master, and that every player, be they novice or veteran, is always learning something new. Monster Hunter World sees 13 years of evolution come crashing together with some new influences to create a very exciting breed of beast. This has always been a superlative series; with the release of World, it's only become easier to see that's an undoubtable truth.'

Getting excited now :)

Didn't plan to buy it based on the beta. Though I understand it wasn't a good taste of it as you had set items and level locked.

I've now caved after a metacritic score of 91 with 40 reviews. Hope I don't regret it. The loot and crafting is what appeals to me.

Glad this has turned out well, needed something to replace the awful D2.

Can you team up with randoms or must you have pre-made teams? I know with single player you get a cat (think shrek puss in boots lol) to help you.

Maybe post in here if your wanting to team up. Makes downing them monsters easier :)

Mine arrived today so I'll give it a go tonight.

Will be a total Monster Hunter noob so I'll probably be asking lots of questions. And to start....

Is your weapon choice at the start important as I've no idea what I'll like, I'm thinking Dual Wielding swords but in a lot of games I like ranged so basically can you change your mind and not suffer to much.

If it's anything like the previous games, you start off with the most basic of every single weapon. Weapons are completely different to the point that choosing a weapon could be considered akin to choosing a class in an RPG.
