GPU prices go boom

I'm in the same position as a few in this thread, still using a AMD 7950 which, to be fair, has done me proud for the years I've had it.. I really need an upgrade but I WILL NOT pay the prices that even the low-mid range cards selling for - the prices are absolute madness.

They may be doing very nicely in the short term but if this, somehow, doesn't alleviate soon then it will kill PC gaming as people, like myself, won't pay the prices that the miners will...

It's a very sad time for proper PC gamers!!

All I want is one poxy card at close to retail prices, it's a joke - a bad one at that.

Most of them aren't even looking to buy, they are just complaining for the sake of it.

And your golden rule of PC building? What BS is that? The beauty of PC building is that you can chop and change and upgrade to other parts when you are ready.

Lastly, you always have the option to mine, rather than complain about it. It would cover the cost of the current inflated prices even if you just mine overnight. In fact you would probably end up better off than if you bought the card at normal prices and didn't mine.
Well, I was. I fried another PCIe LAN card, and since both connectivity and generally outdated PC needed change. I found prices much better right after 2018 hit, as main eseller did up prices for Christmas. My LAN card died and RMA took long enough to hit the "no card/overpriced" time. So I am stuck now. Its not that much of an issue, as i am used to get around, but would be nice to be able to pay reasonable price.

As golden rule goes, its certainly not mine and it seems you just misinterpreted it so here is simplified version of it : you just don't buy 1080ti to your celeron cpu.
There is balance needed in your parts to take most of them. (sidenote : unless you are miner lol ). Nothing about not being able to swap hardware for some upgrade.

And lastly, mining myself. For sure cant do with current setup. I am already warming my room enough with just daily use. Buying overpriced GPU and mine to gain back the offset from reasonable price isn't in my interest either, as I want that rig to last me another 10 years-ish, as current have.

What's interesting is what's going to happen if coins crash and all these mining cards get dumped on the second hand market. Prices will plummet, even new cards won't sell unless they can be competitive with the massive glut of cheap second hand alternatives. That's why there's little supply. Instead of trying to cash in by producing more cards, AMD and Nvidia are hedging to avoid getting stuck with hugely excess stock and murdered when the bottom drops out of the new card market.

Plan to redistribute gpus.
1- get a truck
2- hack e-tailers, and get transactions info, identify the biggest miners(including those who make photos of their mining rigs to gloat), get the adresse
3- post on B market, offering a dozen 580s for £350 each, set a meet for transaction.
4- show up at his house instead of the RDV, and grab all his cards.
5- hack the forum to identify gamers crying for card and mail them a free gpu.

Operation rubbindahood.
problem solved

That’s pretty much a decent spec pc!! Absolute madness

I was going to buy an Vega card on release but I though the price/performance didn't stack up, its laughable these days. I've just bought a PS4 Pro, really like it TBH.

980Ti prices haven't gone too silly as they are pretty inefficient for mining.

I think they are being bought by gamers TBH. Unable to get 1070 they are getting the 980ti's that pop up.

They are going for 300+ on an auction site.

I think that is silly.

Seeing I paid £319 new for mine I could sell mine tomorrow and make on it.

Some members still going on about how this will kill PC Gaming.

The reality is the majority will just wait until prices are sane again.

Until then, i'll just work on my backlog of games...52 completed, 356 to go (plus 81 wishlisted). :D

Pc gaming will die on its arse if this is maintained.
The people who buy/bought £250+ graphics cards only represent a tiny percentage of the PC gaming community. It's the one that gets the most attention as nobody really talks in depth about entry/midrange cards, but it's still fairly inconsequential to the PC gaming industry as a whole.

i think you are missing that this doesn't just affect midrange, it affects all the ranges, low, mid and high. 1080ti is high range and its up what 250 quid.
