Used Car - Vectra VXR, Flame coat ready.

Prefer a subaru. Wouldn't touch that if it was cheaper.

But, I definitely wouldn't spend 6-7k on one. There are many much much better cars available for that sort of money. Especially if you only tend to keep it for a couple of years, you don't want to find yourself in a position where you can't move it on.

I could probably get one cheaper then that and put a small fund anyway for when or if it breaks.

I'm just finding it difficult to find another car which can be as practical with similar performance and cost.

In short does anyone feel it's worth the effort to get one? Or should I dismiss the idea.

Would you be willing to do much of the work yourself Vita? It will keep running costs to a minimum.

I know you have a young baby so your time to tinker will be limited. My lad is 2 1/2 and I'm only just starting to find the time where I get to do anything more than an oil change.

Is the Mazda 6 MPs not an option? Plenty of decent examples around.

Also they are 4WD, which is nice.

I have looked into these in the past and also asked for opinions on here. The downside to them for me is the boot space. I don't think the rear seats fold either.

My son is 1 1/2 and I always make time to sort the car out. As my car is my only car even though I still have the 330i, I'm a bit anal in the sense that if anything needs doing I'll do it. If not I'll use my mechanic.

Again the only worry and this is with the r32 as well is the chain. It's an expensive issue but sometimes it can happen without warning like I mentioned and sometimes they can last for a while.

I had the chain fail on the type r so this is why I'm being extra weary. This is also why I've backed up with an impreza or cupra as an option.

I go on a bit about my old WRX, but it was a cracking car. I did 30k in 12 months and apart from putting a cambelt and clutch on it, the only actual component to fail was the front lambda. To top it off, I averaged 35MPG throughout my ownership.

Perhaps a boring (reliable) choice compared to the Vecta but I'd have another good WRX in a heartbeat.

Can you not get an Insignia VXR for £7k these days?

The Insignia is a damn sight less crap than the Vectra.

Edit: Maybe not, looks like they start at about £10k.

Gearboxes rated for the more or less the same torque as the engine produces iirc

Yup exactly the same.

What vauxhall did was get a standard vectra/astra, put a powerful engine in it and lowered it and then sold it.

Unlike Ford, Renault,Honda etc what go through loads of testing to get the car right.

Yea the Ford STs have a lot of differences to the standard cars, even though they look kinda similar. Vauxhall didn't seem to understand that concept :p

E.g. the mk7 Fiesta ST has the same gearbox in it as the Focus ST. So it can take far more punishment than it ever has to deal with. It's still good even after big tunes.

Please don't buy one; they are horrible. There is absolutely no exclusivity in owning one of these unless you're in the community of people who wear 3/4 length combat trousers and sports vests to show off your tribal tattoos, and shout at your family regularly in Home Bargains.

Someone on here used to own one (MrLOL - changed his name I think).

For that sort of money and performance I'd buy a WRX, Focus ST, Mazda 6 (or 3) MPS, or as mentioned earlier, if an R36 is in budget go for that.

You averaged 35mpg in a Subaru WRX? Wow. What year was it? My 2002 WRX STI never saw over 21mpg.

If you like the golf, but consider it too expensive have you considered an Octavia VRS? They meet all of your requirements other than 250BHP but that's easily solved.

You could spend £6k on something like this; https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201712202182906

And then another £400 on this; http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/s...-octavia-ii-fl-2009-2013-200bhp-stage-1-remap

That gets you up to bang on 250BHP with tons of torque within your budget, whilst basically putting you into a slightly less pretty golf GTI with a bigger boot.

Saab 9-3 Aero? Can pick up a good one easily within budget. I had one for 3 years (a 2008 2.0T) and it was great really, especially after a remap. Only got rid of it cos I wanted something with more power.

just coming in to link to that, lot of car for the cash. basically a rebodied insignia vxr with better build quality and a slightly more desirable badge and about 3-4 grand cheaper than an insignia vxr

Here's a serious question: Do Vauxhalls have different components to Opels?
No.

I ask because everyone over here seems to think that they're crap cars but having lived in Holland for many years Opels have a completely different perception and in fact are known as an incredibly reliable brand. I am also talking from quite a bit of experience here. Are these opinions outdated?

Yes.

Yep, granted it was mainly motorway driving but I was very surprised! 2002 bugeye.

My 05 STi is much worse, averaging 28MPG. I have to drop my speed to 60-65 in the STi to get the same sort of economy, compared to 70 in the WRX.

I was doing so many miles in them it didn't take long to get through a few tanks of fuel and get an idea on the consumption. These figures were consistent throughout my ownership though, I'm not talking the odd tank here and there.
