Police chief 'wants drivers penalised for going 1mph over speed limit'

There's no functional difference between making sure you're under 50 and making sure you're under 55. It's just a number.

I prefer a sensible attitude to speeding, with a bit of human judgement (i.e. recognise that doing 33mph past a school at kicking out time is worse than doing 90mph on the motorway at 2 in the morning), but the fact is that speed cameras - as stupid, offensive and personally annoying as I find them - do save lives. Speeding isn't the biggest factor, but it's an easy one to police, and policing it does help.

If they were that keen why not fit speed limiters to all cars destined for the UK market so they cannot exceed 70 mph? Even my Alhambra 184 dsg is supposed to have a top speed of over 130mph...

The truly shocking thing about this news is there are idiots who still think speeding fines go directly to issuing Police force, beggars belief that people still see them as cash generators preying on vulnerable motorists

Because that makes it more dangerous in some situations. Like overtaking. If you hit the limiter at 70 you might end up stuck on the wrong side of the road if the other guy decides to speed up.

Worryingly, this fool is the NPCC lead on roads policing. Does he seriously think that giving people tickets for doing 71mph on the motorway is a) going to do *anything* to prevent road deaths at all and b) help with public goodwill in a time when it is more important than ever.

To even suggest it shows that he clearly has no idea what he's talking about, politically and legally.

You shouldn't be overtaking in such cases then.

So set your cruise control 3 or 4 mph under the limit and then you will never go over, it really is that easy.

Even without cruise control, it is just as simple to set your speed around 5 MPH or so under the posted limit and you will never go over.

There are no deep dark secrets about keeping under limits, the simple fact of truth is, that every single time anyone goes over the limit, it is a deliberate act, it is never accidental, every single time can be avoided with thoughtfulness and preemptive actions.

lmao, if only world was as perfect and simple as you imagine.

I'd rather drivers spend more time looking ahead than steering at their speedo to not 1mph over.

Road safety should be about good driving and improving your road craft. There are plenty of situations where going over the speed limit is totally safe, like wise there are places where driving 30 mph or even 20 mph is to dangerous. Of course common sense knows this, but as the world is increasingly loosing common sence

Here are some suggestions that would prevent accidents on the road.

1) Encourage all new drivers to take some advanced driving lessons, I'm thinking on the lines of professional drivers (retired x motorway police) sit in the passenger seat with new drivers on motorways.

2) Fix all the pot holes so we don't have to swerve towards each other to avoid them.

3) New drivers should do some skin pan training on water.

4) The police could prosecute all the people who illegal park opposite junctions.

5) Stop councils making silly pedestrian priority schemes like this one in Chester, even the local councilors say Chesters new one is a disaster waiting to happen.

When your using a speed limited vehicle, you rarely overtake and when you do so you should make allowances for it.

The know many truckers don’t (the elephant race syndrome with two trucks jostling to overtake for miles) but the solution is to set your cruise just below your limit which gives a bit of leeway to get past easily on motorways.

banning or restricting motorcycles and pushbikes would be far more effective.
Ban car drivers - You'll eliminate 87% of all multi-vehicle crashes involving motorcycles! :p

What, idiots like the Police themselves?
Not sure if serious.....but it's not the first time this has come up.

"Olly Martins, the police and crime commissioner for Bedfordshire has said that he is considering permanently switching on speed cameras on the M1 motorway in order to fund the local force"
That was in 2015, by the way... and I believe has just come into effect.

"The majority of speed fine revenue goes to the government, but Martin's office said a proportion goes to the local force"
So not all of it directly... but certainly enough and I'm sure they'll get more along the way.
