The VW UP Gti - What do we all think?

Once you’re in it with fuel it’s weighing nearly 1200kg, so less than 100bhp per ton. Add a passenger and it’ll be just the same as any other low powered small hatch.

Depends on your usage I guess. I'd take my RS133 Twingo if I'm just nipping around locally versus my RS200 Clio.

Little cars with a poky engine are great fun for that sort of driving, but any sort of distance and the Clio is much better with 6 gears and cruise control and all that jazz.

Not massively impressed, the 90PS UP TSI has more than 113PS with a simple re-map, and its cheaper...

135PS~ would have been nice.
Well the Up GTI will map to around 135 (based on what people offer for the 113ps Octavia 1.0) and will still include the uprated brakes, 6sp gearbox, steering rack, suspension adjustments and various styling tweaks that the 90ps Up won't have.

Incorrect. VW quote weights with the driver, nearly a full tank of fuel and a bit of luggage. So 1070kg it is. Take the driver out an it's sub 1000Kg.

I think it looks fun, but I do think another 20hp wouldn't go amiss.

Although the twingo is probably the better car, the interior will be a renault interior, so immediately a bit naff.

It's like a budget cygnet :p

Probably better off with a used Fiesta ST tbh.

The UP would be hilarious if it had 100hp more, but 90 isn't great even in a car that light.

They're city cars and there they thrive. On motorways they'll suck balls. But then a 7 series is great on motorways but try doing a 3 point turn in a tight London street.

The Up GTi has 6 gears and cruise control (option)

This was the car I'm considering when I raised the question about wraps/cemamic coating...tempted by the red with black roof and chucking a load of options on. Quite a major downgrade from my 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport but I don't need all that power, and much cheaper to run.

by Peugeot Sport.... Did you need to add that in there..?

I quite like it, that isn't to say I don't think it's overpriced. I think a little bit more power would have been welcome, but a car doesn't necessarily need huge horsepower to be fun. A few folk have pointed out that the rear drum brakes as being a bit naff. But a car that weighs nothing doesn't really need them anyway, but at the price they're asking it would have been a nice touch.

On paper at least it stacks up to the MKI Golf GTi quite well, though I'm sure in a big prang the Up would probably bee the car you could still walk away from, even if it's doesn't feel quite so sharp on the road. There's always an element of "rose coloured glasses" when people start talking about older cars from their yoof. Everything I've read about the little 1.0 Tsi engine sings it's praises and matched to a 6 speed box it should be a capable little thing even at motorway speeds. I like it, I'd like it more if it was £2K ish cheaper. I'm sure they'll sell by the bucket full.

I like my up, good fun to drive but I usually only do short runs. Use it go occasionally see family which is about 100 mile run and seems fine to me.

The gti looks like it could be even more fun.

113bhp and 9 seconds to 60. Doesn’t seem fit to wear the GTI badge. Especially when something like a run of the mill Fiesta with the 140bp 1.0T engine choice in will be just as fun and have the same 0-60 despite the fact it’s heavier.
I know power and 0-60 isn’t everything as it is obviously just a fun little city car but being a GTI it should be quicker in this day and age when the not much bigger Polo and Fiesta have around 200bhp and hit 60 in the late 6’s I would choose a used one of them any day over a new Up if I was after a fun little roller skate

Yes it's actually a slightly different model/trim to the normal 208 GTi

Yes, very different (18 vs 17 wheels, shorter final gear, bucket seats, wider and lower, more racier brakes and suspension but most important change is that it can actually go round corners thanks to limited slip diff.)

Back to the Up though, was kind of worried that 17 would look silly, but it actually suits them well!

As for power/weight, yes, a Fiesta Ecoboost thingy will do the job just as well, but...well I love stupidly small cars and the Fiesta is too big :p

Someone else pointed out the 90PS models can get remapped to 113...I do wonder what this could go to...

It, according to some of the marketing, is a homage to the original Golf GTi on power figures and performance.

Seems lacklustre now, but I remember the time these stats were pretty much where it was at for the hot hatches.
