A rise in forum toxicity.

seems like plenty of people want rather different and sometimes conflicting things

some people have complained about the lack of silliness/.humour others have complained that threads should be more serious

some people have complained about people just attacking posters based on perceptions etc.. rather than what they've written, others have advocated doing that because those posters have stupid posts etc..

I don't think the mods are going to be able to please everyone all of the time

FWIW I don't think Brexiter is a pejorative term but I do think the thread is pure trash at the moment

I think forum trolls are massive issue here. Trolls include people who are here to emotionally gratify themselves rather than to post and discuss ideas, a troll ALWAYS seems to come along, completely ignores the idea in a post, will have absolutely ZERO ability to comprehend what is being talked about, and starts attacking the person who posted the idea instead of rationally refuting the idea.

I think that is the most disgraceful things anyone can ever do. And it goes on all the time, one liner wannabe-comedians are abundant. It was infinitely better in 2006 forums were much more positive, less hostile more civil etc, and since about 2012 it's been going downhill, negativity and hostility and trolling is at an all time high.

Hell, one idea might be to change a few people's forum names as a separate exercise maybe, as it seems like a lot of posters simply start off with a boxing-stance like approach when they interact with certain others, based wholly on who they are, rather than what they saying.
Absolute truth.

The amount of times people start attacking me just because it's asim18 while having absolutely no interest nor clue about the idea I'm posting. It's actually very interesting, I mean I must be one of the most trolled members of the forums lol. But you said more moderation would be better, I don't think it will if any of the mods suffer the same gratification complex as the person who is trolling. I mean I've had completely general non-personal posts removed just because a mod didn't like it, even though 100% of my posts are made in absolute good faith and with an aim for the bettering of society.

i say this is across many forums from overclockers to swinging sites its happening everywhere.

Just, fantastic. :p

OP - on a slightly more serious note, it's only the internet. Nothing that any of these condescending mugs say makes any difference to anything. If it's annoying you that much, just log off for a while. ;)

People would know it was you though as soon as you mentioned mind control propaganda within the first week :p

I do like a diverse range of foruns.

And I know what people say doesnt make any differnce I haven' been on the forums since October. Not because I've ever been a target of this kind of crap its simply because it made the forums rather boring tbh.

What people want and what they should get on here are two different things, I'd seriously hope. This place keeps being vaunted as "Family Friendly" and yet some days it's a complete free for all.
Silly/funny threads should contain the silly/funny comments - serious threads should only contain serious comments. That would be a good start around here these days I feel.

Sure, you need Mods with the right aptitude and in the right places on here and indeed on any medium/large forums out there. Additionally there likely needs to be a conduct bullet sheet or such-like that the Mods sign up to, which is agreed upon and written by the Dons and above (rather than the views of said previous owner that might still be in operation perhaps!?), that contains how they want to approach matters here. Maybe there is one, maybe it needs a revisit...

I really don't feel that the threads need to be picked through with a fine toothed comb at all. A few well placed messages for all to see, aimed at the great unwashed in question, but clearly visible to all could well suffice.

lol. I wouldn't actually want to change my username though. I find troll campaigns to be genuinely interesting in a psychological sense, it really helps you understand some posters motivations. The sheer amount of psychological defence mechanisms, denial, cognitive dissonance, to name a few; although it is bad in a societal sense it's helped me understand so much over the years. Some of the stuff I've witnessed on these forums has been unprecedented which is great if you're into psychology, but not so great for society unfortunately.

I love the "ignore poster" option that this forum has, it makes reading some of the threads on here so much easier with 90% of the drivel removed :D

I really do suggest people try it, it takes a lot of the "I want to read the forum but know XXXXX will be posting rubbish and I just don't want to get into yet another argument with them" stuff away.

I've been on forums for a very long time and been witness to, as well as being subjected to all manner of toxicity.

In the end really it's all down to how you deal with situations. If you simply block someone you're not really solving the problem. Is ignorance really bliss?

Just internally laugh at their wrongness and carry on doing what you do best. That's the only sensible and logical solution.

Personally I've built up a lot of patience over the years for trivial things that some (most?) folks would otherwise get really riled up about. Yeah you can see person X has posted some stuff that people won't take a liking to for whatever reason, if you give them the attention they are looking for, they will just continue to do the same thing time after time until they are banned.

And also on that note, genuinely interesting and/or funny posters who have been banned have taken away some of the character of this forum I'd say. Every community has it's uniqueness, OcUK had that, and it's long been fading away and is now something quite different. There are still pockets of good of course, but the negative aspect somewhat outweighs the positive in many respects, at least in GD anyway.

In short, just be excellent to each other, how hard can it be :p

I never used to use the ignore feature until about 6 months ago.

It makes browsing GD so much easier. There are people on here who never seem to add any real value to a thread and I realised I was subconsciously just ignoring anything written with their banner beneath the text. So the ignore feature just makes things easier.

This is a tech forum run by a pc component retailer and GD is simply a place for things that don't belong in the other sub forums.

Ignoring people's posts isn't skewing my moral compass!

Four people did it for me. It really does make this place much much better.

I’ve never used the ignore feature until recently - it really is much better since the forum upgrade and, as a result, worthwhile! Why tolerate someone when the magic of the internet can make them go away for good :p
