Irrational tyre views?

2 things you never skimp on with a car.

Tyres.
Brakes.

Is saving a few quid on a tyre worth the much increased chance of having an accident?

Mostly commuting, some 70mph, some stop go traffic and I wouldn't call any of it spirited.

I'd prioritise all weather handling, fuel efficiency, durability and low noise over all out summer performance.

Midlands, no real adverse weather bar the odd day or two of snow and its all main roads round here anyway so almost always clear.

It's a no brainer then. I'd have said it if was just pottering around town like a granny then those tyres would've been fine to use until they need replacing.

Stopping distances at 70mph are really going to be impacted with terrible rubber so she needs to invest in some, and I'd say the road noise as well. I had terrible road noise in my Golf until I put some decent tyres on it, noise practically disappeared.

I'd say you have a few options. Keep nagging about them. Do it yourself and send her the bill. Knife/nail in them. Go for drives with her and just scream really loud when talking because of the road noise :D

The Mrs has just bought a set of S Spoke alloys for her Mini clubman... Because they're black and she wanted black 17"s on there...
My opinion is the tyres all need replacing. £260 will get a set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3s all round, 205/45/17. Currently they have

Marshall Mactrac 205/45/17 84v
Cooper Zeon 205/45/17 88w
Jinyu YU63 205/45/17 88w
Hifly HF805 205/45/17 88w

I've offered my views, she says they'll do for now but given her track record and my thoughts on mixing tyre brands across axles let alone tread depths and load ratings...
She's not short of the cash either but it does pain her to spend money.

Would you lot mind surmising her life expectancy? I think she'll die in fewer than 100 miles.

Whilst in the subject, any other suggestions besides Rainsports?

Cheers guys.
Wait... Where can you get 4 rainsports for £260 fitted? They are 271 from camskill and fitting will be around 10-15 per wheel....

Mixing tyres is bad enough because they all have slightly different rolling resistance, but 4 different budget tyres is just dangerous lol

At some point the grip will just let go and she won't be able to regain control.

might teach her a lesson? I don't get people who drive on cheapest rubber they can get. Show her some youtube videos of stopping distance on cheap tyres vs proper rubber.

she might change her mind when something pops up in front of her at 70mph.

I'm an advocate of excellent tyres on moderately powerful cars and above, and that goes for lower powered cars driven in a spirited manner, however, for a low powered car driven normally, with defensive driving, I'd not be so bothered. The difference made would be minimal.

do low powered cars stop quicker then from 70mph? ;) or are under better control with abs kicking in and sliding in wet etc?

what about aquaplaning? do lower power cars aquaplane less?

Its false economy to fit cheap tyres anyway... It blows my mind that people are OK in any car, weather, roads or driving style to mix even decent tyres, let alone shoddy ones... Tue fact its a low powered car have next to no bearing on the quality requirements of the tyre IMO

It won't though will it? Can't say I've ever experienced grip just letting go in any car.

I forgot though, this is OcUK Motors where unless you have MPSS/PS4S you instantly slide off the road and end up in a ditch.

I appreciate that better tyres stop in a shorter distance, are better in the wet etc (and indeed always fit quality tyres to my cars), however there surely is some common sense middle ground between the polar opposites of budget tyres=will die and MPSS/PS4S=essential on here?

No one has said MPSS/PS4S are essential in this thread , just recommendations to replace the ditch finders. Not even had many arguments about the Uniroyal Rainsports.

I think people forget in here that it's often a case of what people can afford, whether that be tyres, cars or anything else.
