sold out of date meat - what would you do?

I'd take it back and get a refund / exchange.
RE eat and sniff. Nothing alpha or macho about that. Working in the middle east I'm often presented with suspicious looking food buffets, and it's pretty much eat or choose to starve. Of course there's a risk of upset stomach, but the likelihood of developing and dying from sepsis because you've consumed food a few days out of date is incredibly low, putting aside exceptional circumstances - such as treatments which might reduce your immune system. Else we'd be hearing about these deaths all the time and there'd be a prevention hashtag.

Have you ever watched Kitchen Nightmares? If you've ever eaten out, you should feel quite assured you've had food past its sell by / used by date. Maybe even worse and been under someone's foot or even off a previous diner's plate! Food for thought.

Your fault for not checking the date to be honest. Put it in the bin and take it as a lesson learnt.

Always check every single expiry date when buying.

Snow(Cadburys)Flake community sadly

I’m not going to bite, but I will say that I hope you don’t make statements like this in real life.

Chemotherapy is a hefty immunosuppressant, as are a number of immunomodulating drugs for serious autoimmune disease. It might be worth a google, as one of the posters has stated he lost his father because of a weakened immune system due to chemo.

Not everyone is on a bandwagon :)

Jeez, give it a sniff man.

I just polished off some potato salad, 5 days after "consume within 2 days of opening".

Waste not want not.

I've seen Iceland home delivery goods sit in room temp areas for hours.... Mostly defrosting. Waiting for a Muppet to move them to a chilled van or storage area. Very sloppy.

Iceland are one of the worst for this sort of thing. All their home delivery drivers are muppets without a brain cell. You can tell by the way they drive.

Personally I would probably just bin it and move on, but complaining to the shop would work too.

I did find it interesting that you were "sold out of date meat" rather than you "bought out of date meat" though. :)

Just to update, I got a £25 "Money Card" from Tesco in the post and they've let the store manager know about the issue with the labels.

I was sold out of date meat, I bought it in good faith, they concealed the date.

Love the yellow sticker section. Such bargains to be had. And to the people who moan that you can't use all the stuff up before the end of the day, well I've got news for you - ever heard of a freezer!

We've had meat that has been in date and opening the shrink wrap, the decomp smell knocked you to the floor. Back it went for a refund.

It's surprising the number of people you see in the supermarkets who just pick up perishable items without checking the date. Certain items, especially bread and fruit you have to as the shops will use all sorts of tricks like stocking the closest to sell by at the front. In the case of our nitrogen packed and sealed fruit, a visual inspection also yields dividends too.

We often wonder where the huge amount of perishable items they don't sell, ends up.

Funny, I had some slicked beef left in my fridge that I forgot about and it was 4 days out-of-date.

Package hadn't ballooned so opened it up, tasted a small part of it and then proceeded to roll all the slices together to form a beef ball and ate it all.

People take Best Before / Use by dates far too seriously.

Was it bad that the supermarket sold an out of date product without your knowledge, Yes. Will it kill you? Most certainly not.

probably not, but not most certainly not...

your taste test is naive/flawed - you won't taste or smell the bacteria that could put you in hospital with food poisoning and eating out of date cooked meat/fish is pretty silly - don't conflate useably and best before dates either - best before dates can often be ignored, use by dates however are there for good reason
