Person of standing within the community

I did a mates for his passport - I really wouldn't consider myself as a person of "social Standing" but his passport come back fine.

Only one of the above I could really claim to be is the following:
  • director/manager/personnel officer of a VAT-registered company

I find it hard to believe, I reckon you should look through the complete list in the previous link and try to think of someone in one of the categories.

Not sure why it's hard to believe. I've looked through the list, and yes under normal circumstances my boss could do it but because he already has to do the employers reference he isn't allowed to do the personal reference.

That list is all well and good, it says "Post office official" so I guess I could walk into my local booze and fags and ask the women who works in the post office counter? not sure that's what they're after but if it will do then winner winner.

I'd ask your doctor and, assuming your work want you to get it done, ask them to pay the fee.

It is hard to believe because you'd have to be a total recluse and as you've just pointed out there is a post office official who knows you to the point where they can at least recognised you and confirm who you are so it turns out that actually you probably have got someone who can sign it for you after all... again reinforcing why it was hard to believe previously.

Is it not a bit old fashioned now when having to fill in a form or background check that it requires someone "of standing" to have to sign it, especially considering they have to have known you for the past 3 years?

I can understand it from 30-40 years ago when you might know a local police officer from his beat, or a bank manager because you had to deal with them regularly etc, but who knows anyone these days?

I'm not sure who I'm supposed to get to fill this bloody thing in, boss want's it done sharpish as well

They're just checking that you know a Tory or two.

:)

I don't blame them, they are busy enough without having to fill out and sign 100's of passport forms/photos

I've done it twice for people as a company director, and it is a bit of a pain in the arse.
If they are that busy why offer the service at all if it's going to cut into their precious time.

I think they'd have rather more people pestering them if they didn't charge tbh... but again, you're asking them to provide you with a service, they're not your mate, why shouldn't you pay for the service?

I didn't say she knows me, I know she's there because I've been into the shop, she wouldn't recognise me or know who I am.

I am a recluse, aside from going to work.

My shotgun license renewal gets signed by an ex brickie.Because he did a bit of time as a lecturer (in bricklaying...) the police accept it...

GPs charge for this 'service', will mine does

People who aren’t accepted
Your countersignatory can’t:

  • work for HM Passport Office
  • be a doctor, unless they state that they know you well (eg good friend) and that they recognise you easily from your photo
lol, clearly doctors are not people of standing within the community :D

you probably do, unless you literally have no mates and no family

here is a list re: passport applications for example:

hey ill hook you up for a tenner OP. ;-)

I take a little offence that an airline pilot is 'qualified', but an air traffic controller is not?

its their penance for the awful spacing and terrible speed restrictions.
