If you’ve already got the fastest card any reasonably adjusted person would be willing to pay for gaming then you’ll be alright. True. But if someone on a 970 can’t afford to upgrade then a lot more games will be optimised at that guy and all the people on 1060s. So gfx will stop being so bleeding edge - suits me though my 980Ti is going to keep on keeping up if there’s no progress.

This is a very good argument here. Can anyone tell me what they would be doing with a 2080ti this year that they couldn't do already with a 1080ti?
4k TV's will eventually drive demand for fluid 60fps gameplay much like 1080p did years ago, but its a much slower uptake this time around as people are quite happy with 1080p even today. (Hell, i still cant watch BBC local news in 1080p ffs! another story but shows how eve 1080p is still not 100% adopted). VR now is highlighting a little demand for more power, but its so niche in the grand scheme of things I dont think Nvidia or AMD are banking on that in the short term and so are not pushing hard to get everyone VR ready asap - they will be happy to let that bubble away for years until it goes truly mainstream with the help of facebook and google.
Honestly, i don't know who needs more power than a 1080ti right now, other than the aformentioned enthiusiasts demading the absolute best leading edge hardware for their mega high refresh gaming monitors. Until there is mass demand for 4K tvs in households, and the *cough cough* console gamers *cough* demanding it en mass i dont see a need for anything more powerful than a 1080ti for gaming in 2018,2019 or 2020. Im pretty sure Nvidia doesnt see a need for much more power than a 1080ti for gamers or VR too right now - so will be happy to churn out a slightly improved card generation, milk them miners and basically keep everyone happy without much effort.
Pretty sure we will just be buying a 2080 for *minimum* £750 that = 1080ti performance. With Nvidia laughing all the way to the bank!

I agree. Until high refresh rate 4K monitors come out there's just no need.
OTOH those 8k monitors are very tempting.
4K @120hz ultra settings - yes I'll grant you that, a 1080ti would struggle! But seriously, come on.
4K @ 60hz is the big draw but a 1080ti pretty much does that no problem already, so no need for upgrade.
as above, its covered already by a 1080ti. Only a few games fall short of the 60fps average. The 10 series range was big news to help push the launch of a VR world. but now we see its not going to progress much more in the next couple of years until people get buying them.
This review shows the 1080ti hitting as low as 67 FPS average at 3440x1440, with other results from 75fps to 113fps in current titles.

i think the above is spot on. the 1080ti IS a capable 4k gaming card, no doubt about that, BUT it is not a 4k 60fps max detail single card solution. all being well the 1180ti will be, but i cant wait that long!.

Yeh I would like some more power.
Sitting in front of a 4k 40" need more aa, and have to turn down the settings in a good few games anyway.
Funny how people just think it's to show off on internet forums, I honestly couldn't think of anything more sad.

You're probably right in that they won't need to offer any major performance improvement this year given the current state of the competition, games and display technology though I think that will change next year when 200Hz Ultrawides and 144Hz 4k finally become available - those will need much more than 1080Ti can offer.
I'll be upgrading as I'm not on the current generation of cards and will get a nice performance increase for my current 4k monitor and don't want to buy into 1080Ti when it's near end of it's lifecycle. Will also leave me a better position when new display tech shows up and I can upgrade the monitor.

That's pretty cools stats right there. I would say, imo, the future mainstream is 4k Gaming @ 60fps - based on the fact this past/current generation is all about 1080p @60fps. So I'd still say a 1080ti is all you need now and for at least the next two years. You are totally right if you demand a minimim 60 fps from 2020's AAA release. But most will be happy with an average of 60fps, with dips down to 50 or so.

I'm still holding out for the single GPU that can tackle 4k. I've been holding out on 4k monitors as the tech I want isn't out yet; I want an IPS 4k monitor with HDR, 120-144hz and g-sync. I'm aware that this monitor is coming Q3-Q4. What I'd like to see now is a single GPU that can replicate the 1080ti/1440p performance at 4k. I doubt it'll be the 2080, but maybe the 2080ti?

My view is the GTX1080ti is to 4K what the 780ti was to 1080p - a very good 4k / 1080p card which did still require some fiddling if you wanted to keep that 60fps in all games
My hope is then that the 1180(Ti?) will do to 4k what the 980(Ti) did to 1080p - which was basically mean you can brainlessly put everything to the max and just assume it should just about always be hitting 60fps.

I'd still prefer what the 1080ti is to 1440p, max everything out and average 100fps. By average 100fps, I mean across all games. Some games maintain 70ish maxed, others hit the 144 cap and many are inbetween. Only then will I buy into 4k.
I've managed to hold off getting a 1080ti, i game at 1440 and I#m hoping the next round of GPU's will max everything out at that res.

The current top end cards are already 4k60hz focused as you’ve said yourself, so the current focus is absolutely not 1080p 60hz; I think most here would be very happy to move up to more modern setups, if they haven’t already.
It sounds like all you need right now is 1080p 60hz, and that’s fine, we all have a preference. The 1080ti is absolutely not the card for that though, and the next gen ti certainly won’t be either.
I just don’t see where you were coming from on your original statement, and the sentiment from other users seems to coincide with me, but as I said before I would’ve been delighted to see evidence that the next generation ti was unnescessary, but I’ve not really witnessed you providing that.
Not having a go, I was just finding the discussion interesting and it seems you’ve side stepped from ‘it’s unnecessary for anyone’ to ‘I don’t need a new card for two years’ and if that’s the case then hell, power to you mate, because the upgrade itch is burning me hard and I want high frame rate, high resolution, frame sync technology, but it’s going to cost.
