What would a third world war really look like?

Just thought I would point out, Russia weren't the aggressors in Threads. Just because they know they can't win a fight doesn't mean for sure there won't be one :(

Something that seems to go over many people's heads. Sometimes things become unreconcilable one way or another even with the best intentions from both parties to avoid bloodshed.

Matter of days??!..no chance!, matter of minutes more like!

Seen the panic in supermarkets when something as simple as snow is forecast! lol :p

The number one rule of military strategy is don't pick fights you can't win, and don't even pick fights where you aren't the overwhelming favourite to win.
The footnote being "if you do pick a fight you're the overwhelming favourite to win and it goes so badly the counterattack sees you're capital burnt down, make sure to be on that side next time" XD

Erm. The soil ? And I’m sure the community would unite to transport the veg around the country. (There are loads of refrigerated lorry’s on Britain’s roads)

I mean, I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure if you gave me a plot of soil/allotment I could easily survive on home grown veg etc.
Do you know how long it takes to grow a food crop from seed? We're talking months in most cases.

We only have extended seasons for fruit and veg in this country because 1) We buy from all over the world, so conditions in one part might be favourable whilst another is experiencing winter and 2) we have expensive facilities to grow certain crops outside of season, indoors with vast amounts of artificial heat and light.

As others have said, we currently import 60% of our food in this country, and so do lots of other countries (run a deficit).

Then lastly there's the problem of other people stealing your produce and/or land/means of growing your food. Which is nearly 100% likely.

I'm afraid the reality is that a) food doesn't grow quick enough to stop people starving and b) human nature would lead to a blood-bath where people fought and died over radishes and turnip seeds.

Billions would indeed starve in the first couple months. Death typicall occurs after 45 days. After a couple weeks you'll be too weak to work also. Game over.

Wouldn't worry, there's always Just Eat!

'What would a third world war really look like?'

(if you are anywhere near a major population centre)

Really, really bright for a very short while before the dark nuclear winter sets in?

I've got over 17 acres here, and my own cattle and fowl, but I too would probably find it hard to survive. If I killed a beast and amateurishly butchered it a lot would go to waste and that that did not would need preserving without refrigeration. As FoxEye said, if you haven't tried growing your one fruit and veg you have no idea how labour intensive it would be without power implements and again, long term storage for the winter months? Add to fighting off my starving neighbours with a diminishing supply of cartridges and a need to sleep.... Nah, it wouldn't be practical, best to try for a few months and then if needed take an overdose ;) The fighting at the doors of Hack Green "secret" nuclear bunker would be a sight worth seeing, the key holders might want to consider their game plan....<LOL>

I'm sure I read somewhere that to maintain a year round healthy calorie intake and balanced diet you would need an absolute minimum of 4 acres of land for 4 adults assuming you would be limited to non-intensive farming techniques, have to also assume you had the skills, time, and security/supplies to get up and running of course.

Okay, that’s fair enough. Maybe I didn’t think it through enough :p

I’m no farmer by any means! It’s just that the U.K. has so much land, that I couldn’t really believe people would actually starve.

We almost starved in WW2 with less people and an entire country converted to a wartime economy

From our point of view? we wouldn't see it because we would all be dead, well most of us.

The UK would be mostly uninhabitable, as would large parts of Europe, that's what a third world war would be like.

There would certainly be a lot more "no-go areas" :p

The land would be unusable due to radioactivity. We wouldn't have the available seed or young animals to restock. There would be a nuclear winter preventing anything from growing. Even if it did there would be no infrastructure to get it to people... And it would take months to grow even if it could.

WW3 would most definitely be sub-optimal.
