Nvidia Ampere might launch as GeForce GTX 2070 and 2080 on April 12th

So was there an actual conference or anything where people were expecting news? and there has been none, or was it just rumours?

I'm sitting on my old 5850 at the moment as my 1070 had to be returned. Can add £50 to what I paid (full refund) and get a decent 1070ti. I was happy for 1070 performance and don't know whether to buy or not. I can't play anything on the 5850 (well not anything new), so was hoping for some sort of news. Don't really want to be stuck on the 5850 for months and months.

Should I just bite on the ti?

I don't see any reason why nVidia would be in a hurry to release anything new. Their current architecture is still flying off the shelves and they have absolutely no competition in terms of performance from anyone in the near to middle future.

For the same reason that intel and Nvidia did for years; to maintain the lead and to keep the product fresh and in demand.

Competition keeps prices low and innovation high, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t release new product without it. Monopoly stifles creativity and drives up prices, but if Nvidia never released anything new, they would eventually be caught up to.

It’s the perfect time to release a modestly more powerful line imo, something with greater efficiency, more mining ability and something to tempt an upgrade out of the Maxwell users, and to create a more significant gap between Nvidias and AMDs midrange (the only place they are remotely comparable).

more enthusiasts want 4k@60fps and 1440@144fps which the current line of cards can already struggle with, nevermind if you want a new top end card to last 3-4 years.

I posted benchmarks earlier in this thread of the 1080ti hitting as low as 63 to 75fps in UW, and below 60 at 4K in some titles.

I don’t think we’re not at ‘enough’ power yet, and I doubt we ever will be. I mean sure enough can be whatever you want, but games will only get more demanding with ‘pro’ consoles and higher refresh 4K monitors.

There are some awful looking ports for sure, but there are some incredible looking pc games imo. Metro Exodus isn’t that far away, I have a feeling it’s going to be a card destroyer.

Monitors will always drive the need for faster cards. Plug in Dell's 8k screen and you can genuinely start moaning that your 1080ti is barely playable. That doesn't mean there is a viable market for faster cards.

Unless things change I think we can look forward to being drip fed very small performance upgrades for the foreseeable future as for most gamers, current cards are providing plenty of power.
