Is Porsche about to destroy the 'Ring record?

i know ground effect was banned from competition due to it's scary habit of trying to kill people, but is it outright banned at the track level?

ie even if it was a one-off publicity stunt you couldn't use it.
Ground effects were not banned due to a scary habit of trying to kill people. Some race series' outlawed ground effects due to the additional risk of a major incident caused by significantly increased cornering speeds - not the same thing at all.

They are not banned at track level, or in all forms of motorsport.

Porsche should take this to pikes peak as well.

Have you seen the EV VW are taking? It's pretty nuts.

Having read a fair bit about this "car" and recent technological advances in general (particularly in electric propulsion) it does make me wonder at what point the human body becomes a limitation. Surely we can't be far off, fightet pilots have blacked out in combat maneuvers, I wonder how the G forces of these mental beasts compare.

I'd also like to see what engineering marvels we could achieve if someone with a massive budget just said "here, £100m, go nuts".

The 919 just beat last years pole time by less than a second, this years F1 cars are faster than last years by about a second so I reckon when F1 turns up there later in the year they will have the lap record back.
Which lap record? F1 will never take the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record from the Le Mans sports cars. F1 cars are much too stiff and the 'ring is too bumpy for them to be fast around it.

Fighter pilots black or red out because of the sustained G forces involved in certain manoeuvres, specifically sharp climbs or dives (e.g. loops), but this is because of the direction of the G forces acting in either an upward or downward direction causing blood starvation or over-supply to the brain. If your suffering those G forces in a race car it's already gone very wrong!

F1 drivers are only affected by peak Gs for fractions of the time that pilots are. A quick Google suggests the highest G recorded by an F1 car was in the region of 6.0 going through 130R at Suzuka, for about 0.6 seconds.

With F1 drivers it's more likely that fatigue will be a factor not passing out, unless you get to crazy cornering speeds, but the FIA are highly unlikely to allow that.

Ha! Made me chuckle.

Nooooo

David Purely’s crash was over 100G :D

He survived an estimated 179.8g when he decelerated from 173 km/h (108 mph) to 0 in a distance of 66 cm (26 inches) after his throttle became stuck wide open and he hit a wall

6.43 for the P1 prototype was the previous 'non road legal' record I believe, the 919 has done it in 5.19?

What the actual ****? I know a race spec car is going to monster a track modified road car but god damn.

Wow, that must have be seriously intense! Would like to see a full on-board of that.

If my math is correct that's an average speed of over 145mph!!!
