Glasgow School Of Art Burns Down .........Again !

It probably fell down the same pit that took Grenfell - cut corners, the cladding etc. It's what the council pen-pushers are best at doing.

I think not, the finest dark hardwoods from USA and Canada were sourced for the interiors, no expense was spared for the restoration, except maybe
CCTV or a couple of night-watchmen.

Surely the Garage isn’t shut?! The end of days is here ladies and gentlemen!

Nah, that part never closed. So you can still get your typically crap night if you wanted. Campus is wrecked though along with o2, so i guess other clubs are going to be much busier now.

I'm going to a gig in Glasgow in November, I think it's at the O2 Academy rather than the ABC. That's OK then. :)

It looked like the scaffolding around the building helped the fire spread from what I can see.

Shame this happened again and my Mrs says it was lovely inside, I've never been inside so can't comment.

If the Scottish Govt announce a complete refurbishment of this building costing tax-payers tens of millions of pounds I will be very annoyed. Yes, it's tragic what has happened to this building, but what's left to salvage ? I presume any original works are completely destroyed. It will never be the same again.

I would get ready to be annoyed then as there is no question, it will be restored.

It's a class 1 A building, it's a tourist trap and frankly it's already cost around £20m just for the library refurb so that's entirely wasted if it's just demolished (also a taxpayer expense, as that isn't free either)...

It entirely depends on if the walls are still stable, but either we have a building that makes money simply by existing or it's replaced by some composite/glass monstrosity instead.

However i believe GSA should give up the building, it's clearly impossible to have art students in there for much longer if they continue to use volatile materials (not that it matters, there's nothing flammable left anyway).

Surely one of the entire points of the restoration from last time should have been to use fireproof materials / make the building as fireproof as possible? And yet it's completely burned down again.
It wasn't finished being restored.

I know it's in a lousy location, narrow streets and a fierce incline, but the heroic fire service are to be congratulated for not actually doing very much except stopping the fire from spreading south of the Clyde.

With their failings at Grenfell in the public eye it's about time the Fire Service's unwritten protection from criticism by the press was reviewed.
I’m not really sure what you expect - for them to negotiate with the fire to rebuild the building?

Reports coming out today suggesting the remains of the building are structurally unsafe and may need to be demolished . It's one thing preserving a Class A building, but re-building it entirely from scratch defeats the "historic" significance, in my opinion. I think you're right, though …. I should be prepared to be annoyed, as should a lot of other taxpayers.

Indeed, I think MacIntosh eschewed modern techniques, preferring masonry and wood, and didn't employ much structural steel, so if the floors have gone
there ain't much preventing the outer walls falling in.

Best chance is for the Art School to move into a purpose built, modern """"FIRE RESISTANT"""" structure built on a new site and the remains of the Macintosh edifice to be disassembled, numbered, and stored with the future possibliity of it being rebuilt and restored as a C.R. Macintosh museum in a new site all paid by private investment and donation.

Channel 4 news just stated if the building is going to be restored it will be at a cost of £100m

Not heard much mentioned, and it might well be different in Scotland and or a variation within the contract but usually this would be on the contractor if it happened whilst they were in possession. I imagine Kier project managers are in for a busy week.

Yeah, there’s no way this should be getting picked up by the tax payer.

Why not? It'd be like if Buckingham palace (if going purely off of grade structures) burnt down, it brings in tourists (perhaps less since the last fire, but still), atleast it will repay itself in a manner.

If Keir was responsible for the fire (not just the custodianship while it was under semi-rebuild), then that is understandably where the money should come from, otherwise i can't see it.
