Upgrade and new(ish) rigs

Well... I just had a beer for Dutch courage and then pressed "buy" on a 2200G rig for my youngest, a GT 1030 (to go with my current rig) for my eldest, two 1080p monitors, two 250GB SSDs, and a 2600X upgrade for me.

<gulp>

I think apart from house buying and holidays this is the largest single outlay I've ever spent in one day!

Thanks for you help and information guys (especially @orbitalwalsh!).

Haha, should be an exciting few hours building !!!!

:D

Cheers. And thanks for all your input on this thread. It really helped a lot. I was a bit lost at the start, but feel I've made the best decision my budget can manage now. Talked about this with the boys last night and they are both over the moon! (There was a little bit of sizing up, "so he gets what; I get what?" but overall they were both delighted. Eldest kept ambushing me with hugs all evening. They know how to work me... :))

Going to be a busy week next week!!

haha, always the way ( though mine are still under 5) . What board did you grab for your son ?

also, worth having a look at AMD RAM Calculator.. thing is damn good and all ram and board vendors should be looking at it seriously!

I got the Gigabyte B350M that you recommended. Looks good.

And yeah, I will definitely be looking at that RAM calculator and spending some time tweaking the systems when I get them. Since I don't seem to be able to get into any games at the moment, this is the most fun I'll have with them! :)

hopefully comes with a APU or Ryzen 2000 sticker on the box! if not will need a BIOS update ! quickest way is through Gigabyte unless reseller was able to flash it for you at a cost ?

Just managed to cancel! So any idea what's the best course of action to make sure I get a good board with the right BIOS?

none really, most with gigabyte boards send off to be flashed or other vendors apply for AMD boot kids . the last option is using a reseller that will flash the board for £15 odd .
were they able to tell you if they could flash or if board is flashed ? russian roulette as you dont know how long stock as been at a warehouse before moving to reseller

Dagnabbit!

So do you know if there are any boards that either come with a suitable BIOS or that allow BIOS flashing without a CPU? I've heard some can do this, but haven't been able to find out which ones.

Flagship! X370 Gaming 3's did have their bios's flashed by gigabyte going into the store but not sure if they flashed units only for That Bundle Deal or All X370 Gaming 3 stock... @GIGA-Man might be able to shed light as i cant remember the thread it was on.
small problem, its ATX sized

some have had luck with B350 Strix but thats rolling in at £105 .

Ah, yeah £105 is a bit steep. I've spend so much already!

I do need mATX as that's all that will fit in my spare case.

I've posted in the CS forum to ask where we stand with this issue with OcUK. A competitor I spoke to on the phone said they'd flash the BIOS for me if I emailed in the order number. Hopefully OcUK will offer the same as I'd trust them more than this other site.

Depends on how busy they are

Annnnd, done!

CS on the phone said I should still get it by Monday or Tuesday. Great stuff. Kudos OcUK - great service!

EDIT:
Thanks again @orbitalwalsh - you really saved me a lot of faff by reminding me of that. Really appreciate the time you've put into helping with this project. :D

NO WORRIES MATE :D glad it got sorted !

did you grab yourself Aorus board for ryzen chip?

No, in the end I went for the Strix X470-F. I did a fair bit of research and weighing up and both look good boards, but what swung it for me was the better BIOS on the ASUS - especially the memory options. From what I read and watched it looked like I'd get more joy trying to overclock/tweak the RAM with Strix board.

asus does have a slicker BIOS that cant be denied and with ram tweaking, no mater what board you use, they're all ***p haha. X370 is easier lol. but should improve with bios updates.

Use AMD Ram calculator !

going with 8 pack/ team group xtreme helps a lot

managed to hit 3466hz with Ultra fine but 3533 needs a full day of test and got 3600hz on 7 but its all down to the ram calculator . will se eon Ryzen 2 thread a lot of Hero owners are using it as like most x470 owners cant get 3200 to play nice from xmp haha

What timings do you get at 3466?

I'd be very happy with 3466 and decent timetim askin with a good bitbo click.
