i7 4790k hitting 90+ degrees under load

I've recently bought a 4790k to upgrade my 1150 mobo. I'm cooling it with a Corsair H60 v2, and my CPU under load is hitting the high 90+ degrees. I'm really nervous that my CPU is going to fry.

I've attempted to reseat the H60 twice, and still have high temps. Before I was using a G3258 with the same cooler, and would only hit like 67degrees max under load.

I also reset the bios and running stock settings. The fan Pump is set to max, and the cpu fan is also running almost max.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3.

The thermal paste I'm using is Coolermaster IC Essential E1 Grey Edition

Should I take out the motherboard, and attempt to reseat the heatsink again?
 
It won't "fry", there's a safety mechanism that throttles the CPU back at ~100C.

What did it replace? Could be the pump is on the way out...

It replaced a G3258K.

I've just removed the H60 and replaced it with the stock fan, and it's still jumping upto the high 90degrees. actually hit 100c

It also idles at around 41c
 
4790K will put out about an extra 35W over the G3258K when pushed, so it will run hotter. The H60 should keep it to 75-80C if it's in good health and configured correctly. The motherboard running the fan header the pump is plugged into at 100%?

I always preferred the way my old H100 did it. Molex power for the pump and it controls the pump speed itself, no motherboard managed headers to mess with it...

Yeah my motherboard has a CPU_OPT header for the pump, which I was running at 100%

Could the CPU be faulty, or should I be looking at the motherboard maybe?
 
Yeah. It's the only thing I had on hand to try, other than keep trying with the corsair cooler.

My son does have a Coolermaster 120V Seidon V2 inside his PC I could try out tomorrow.
 
The 4790k is a much higher power component than a G3258, so it will get hotter. I'd speculate that the chip might be a good candidate for a delid, but first I'd check voltages as mentioned above. Same for pump speed.
 
I had this exact problem when I upgraded to the 4790K and found it was the voltage was set too high by the BIOS automatically. It was something like 1.35 or something crazy.

Go into your BIOS and set your VCORE to something like 1.15/1.20 volts initially on stock speeds.
 
Looking at his HWMonitor picture he isn't even running it overclocked so something is seriously wrong there. I know my 4790k was really hot running before I delidded it but at least it was overclocked. Delidding knocked a whopping 25 degrees C off load temps. To rule out a bad mount I would clean it all off and apply a fresh blob of thermal paste and see how that is.

If I remember right wasn't there a problem with Gigabyte Z97 boards applying too much voltage which was fixed with a bios update?

Pic shows 1.239V which isn't that bad. - I've seen some that ran 1.273V stock. Worth checking the BIOS revisions. Maybe worth trying dropping it back to 1.2V manually, see if it's stable.
 
Just to give you more info Gilbert, I've opened up CPU-Z and have a core volatage of 1.158v ... it is running at 4.4 GHz.

So drop that voltage dude and it will probably work out :)
